The County Government of Uasin Gishu, under the leadership of Governor Jonathan Bii, continues to make significant strides in transforming local agriculture through diversification into high-value crops. In a major boost to coffee farming, Governor Bii, together with Nandi Governor H.E. Stephen Sang, presided over the distribution of 60,000 coffee seedlings to farmers across all six wards in Kapseret Sub-County: Megun, Ngeria, Racecourse, Langas, Kipkenyo, and Simat/Kapseret.
The initiative is part of a broader county strategy aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, boosting farmer incomes, and positioning Uasin Gishu as a key player in Kenya’s coffee sector.
“This is a major step toward building a resilient agricultural economy,” said Governor Bii. “By supporting coffee farming, we are not only creating new revenue streams for our farmers but also reinforcing our commitment to long-term sustainability and food security.”
In addition to seedling distribution, Governor Bii also announced the disbursement of Ksh 12 million to five local SACCOs and farmer groups. The beneficiaries include Kipkenyo Kisor, Tuiyo Kormaet, Megun, and Racecourse SACCOs, as well as the Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative Society. The funds will support capacity-building efforts, improve access to farm inputs, and strengthen the local coffee value chain.
“We are empowering our farmer organizations with the resources they need to thrive,” said the Governor. “This funding will facilitate better organization, increased access to markets, and higher value for their produce.”
The event was attended by Deputy Governor Hon. Evans Kapkea, members of the County Executive, and local leaders, who all reiterated their commitment to supporting farmers in embracing coffee as a viable economic activity.
The County Government remains steadfast in its vision to diversify agriculture and promote agribusiness as a pathway to prosperity for every household.
