Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim has officially launched the activation of traffic lights across major intersections in Eldoret town, marking a significant milestone in the county's efforts to modernize urban infrastructure and improve road safety.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Governor Bii emphasized the importance of the new traffic management system in reducing congestion and minimizing accidents, particularly at busy junctions. "This is a major step toward improving traffic flow and enhancing safety across all junctions in the city," he stated.
The installation of traffic lights is part of the broader urban development agenda under the governor's "Nguzo Kumi" blueprint, which focuses on infrastructure enhancement to support economic and social growth. The county government has been working in collaboration with transport engineers and road safety experts to install and calibrate the traffic lights, which are now operational at several busy junctions, including Uganda Road, Zion Mall, Kiptagich Street, and Oginga Odinga Avenue.
Governor Bii urged all motorists, pedestrians, and boda boda operators to respect the signals and familiarize themselves with the new system. "I encourage all citizens to take time to understand how the traffic lights work and to follow the signals responsibly. This is not just about infrastructure — it's about building a safer, more orderly city," he said.
The county government has also announced plans for a public education campaign to raise awareness on traffic light usage and road safety, particularly targeting public transport operators and school children.
The launch of the traffic lights is expected to significantly improve traffic management in Eldoret, contributing to the city's elevation to a city status and supporting its growth as a regional economic hub.
