Eldoret came alive yesterday as residents, students, and health advocates gathered to mark World No Tobacco Day under the global theme, “Protecting Youth from Tobacco Industry Influence.” The event, organized by the Uasin Gishu County Health Department in collaboration with local universities and youth groups, sent a strong message: the fight against tobacco begins with empowered youth.
The day kicked off with a peaceful march from Eldoret Sports Club to Moi University Town Campus, with participants waving banners reading, “Tobacco-Free Generation Starts With Me!” The vibrant procession drew support from passersby and highlighted growing concern over the rising use of tobacco among teenagers and young adults.
A Call to Action
Leading the event was Dr. Mercy Chebet, County Executive for Health, who warned of the silent but deadly impact of tobacco use in Kenya.
“Tobacco-related diseases are killing our people silently. Today, we say enough is enough. We are teaching our youth how to say no to addiction,” said Dr. Chebet.
Voices from the Youth
Several students shared personal stories about the dangers of tobacco and the pressure to conform. Brian Kiptoo, a university student, moved the crowd with his heartfelt testimony:
“My uncle died of lung cancer last year. He started smoking in high school. If only he had known how dangerous it was, maybe he’d still be here.”
Creative Advocacy and Community Engagement
The event also featured free medical checkups, a street art competition, and spoken word performances, all centered on raising awareness about tobacco's harmful effects.
A symbolic bonfire at Huruma Grounds brought the event to a powerful close, as participants burned cigarette boxes to pledge their commitment to a tobacco-free future.
“We are not just burning cigarettes—we are lighting the way to a healthier tomorrow,” said one youth leader during the ceremony.
A Fight for the Future
As the sun set over Eldoret, one message rang clear: the fight against tobacco is a fight for the future. With youth at the forefront and the support of the community, Uasin Gishu County is taking bold steps toward a healthier, smoke-free generation.
