The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arraigned Khadija Abdullahi Bare, a former Chief Protocol Officer at the Garissa County Government, over the alleged use of forged academic credentials to unlawfully secure public employment.
According to EACC, Ms. Bare presented a fake Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Political Science purportedly from the University of Nairobi, which enabled her to fraudulently acquire the county position.
She was arrested on June 12, 2025, following the conclusion of investigations, and appeared before the Garissa Law Courts on Monday. She faced multiple charges, including fraudulent acquisition of public funds amounting to KES 6,825,266.40, forgery, and uttering a false document.
The court released her on a cash bail of KES 100,000 or an alternative bond of KES 500,000 pending further proceedings.
EACC said the arrest and arraignment underscore its ongoing efforts to safeguard integrity in public service by cracking down on individuals who present forged academic documents to gain employment or promotions in government institutions.
“The Commission remains committed to ensuring that only qualified individuals occupy public offices. The use of forged academic papers to secure employment undermines merit, integrity, and service delivery,” the EACC said in a statement.
The case is part of a broader crackdown targeting individuals and networks responsible for the growing problem of academic fraud in both national and county governments.
Further mention of the case is expected in the coming weeks as the prosecution prepares to present evidence against the accused.
