Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat’s village mates in Selia, Mosop constituency, Nandi County, took to the streets on June 17, 2025, to defend him against rising public criticism following the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang.
The protest came just a day after Lagat officially stepped aside from his role to allow for impartial investigations into the controversial death. Holding twigs and chanting in unity, the villagers said Lagat was being unfairly targeted and called for justice on his behalf.
“He is a humble man. Even when he’s home, he walks freely with everyone and even gives to street children. Let the investigation be fair,” said protestor Sylvester Kosgei.
Lagat, under mounting pressure from civil society and the public, stepped aside on June 16 through a formal statement, citing his commitment to transparency and justice. His deputy is now set to handle the duties of his office.
“In the good and conscious thought of my role I have today opted to step aside"
He also expressed condolences to Ojwang’s family and pledged full support for the inquiry.
The protests in his hometown highlight the divide between public opinion and local support for the embattled officer, whose future now depends on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
