At least 200 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating crash involving an Air India flight bound for London. Authorities say one survivor has been identified—a British national seated in 11A.
According to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik, the lone survivor was seated in seat 11A on the Air India Boeing 787-8, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to Gatwick Airport in the UK.
The flight manifest, released by Indian authorities, lists the survivor as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen. Indian media have reported speaking with Mr. Ramesh from his hospital bed, where he is currently receiving treatment.
“Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” Mr. Ramesh reportedly told journalists, sharing an image of his boarding pass as proof of identity and seat number.
Commissioner Malik confirmed to ANI News that the survivor is in hospital and remains under medical care.
Air India said the ill-fated flight carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian.
In a statement issued from Buckingham Palace, King Charles and Queen Camilla said they were “desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning.”
“Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones,” the royal statement read.
