A multi-agency operation led by police officers and officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) uncovered a large-scale counterfeit alcohol manufacturing operation in the Sinai area of Moiben Sub-county on Saturday night.
Thousands of bottles of counterfeit alcoholic beverages were seized during the raid, which targeted a private residence believed to be a hub for the illicit trade. In addition to the fake alcohol, authorities confiscated several liters of ethanol and a machine suspected to be used in the production of counterfeit KRA seals—an indication of the operation’s sophistication.
One suspect was arrested at the scene, while several others fled and are currently being sought by law enforcement. Investigations are ongoing to track down the suspects and dismantle the wider network behind the illegal operation.
Officials have not yet released the estimated street value of the seized goods, but preliminary assessments suggest the total could run into millions of shillings.
Saturday's bust is part of an intensified crackdown on illicit liquor in Uasin Gishu County, as authorities respond to the growing menace of counterfeit alcohol. Recent months have seen similar operations across the region, with law enforcement expressing concern over the scale and evolving tactics of the illegal trade.
Police noted a troubling trend: the relocation of production facilities to upscale residential areas, where such activities are less likely to arouse suspicion. This development has complicated enforcement efforts, allowing criminal enterprises to thrive behind closed doors.
The government has reiterated its commitment to eradicating the trade through coordinated multi-agency efforts. Authorities are urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity and have warned that individuals found assisting in the production or distribution of illicit alcohol will face severe legal consequences.
“This crackdown will continue relentlessly,” said one senior police official involved in the operation. “We are determined to root out those endangering lives and evading tax through these illegal practices.”
The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement to protect communities from the dangers posed by counterfeit alcohol.
