Land Justice Central to Kenya’s Progress, Says NLC CEO Kabale Tache Arero

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Land Commission (NLC), CHRP Kabale Tache Arero, has reaffirmed that land justice remains at the heart of Kenya’s development agenda, emphasizing the need to blend innovation with constitutional values to address both historical and emerging land issues.

Speaking during the second day of the 4th Regional Research Conference, Tache welcomed delegates and stakeholders with a powerful call to action: to uphold the principles of justice, equity, and sustainability in Kenya’s land governance.

“The discussions from the conference have powerfully demonstrated how land justice remains central to Kenya’s development agenda,” said Tache. “The insights shared reaffirmed our collective responsibility to address historical land injustices while building sustainable systems for future generations.”

The NLC CEO emphasized the pivotal moment facing the country, where technological advancements must integrate with long-standing traditions and legal frameworks. Among the innovations being harnessed are blockchain-based land titling, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, and the National Land Information Management System (NLIMS), all aimed at transforming Kenya’s land sector.

“We stand at a critical juncture where technology and tradition must converge,” she said. “Our deployment of blockchain titling, GIS mapping, and the National Land Information Management System represents progress, but we must do more to align these innovations with our constitutional vision.”

Tache stressed that the 2010 Constitution laid the foundation for transformative land reform. The challenge now, she noted, lies in ensuring full and equitable implementation that benefits every Kenyan, regardless of geography or status.

“The 2010 reforms gave us the framework; now, we must focus on implementation that truly serves all Kenyans,” she added.

The conference brought together key partners including NLC Kenya, NRF Kenya, KELIN Kenya, ActionAid Kenya, FAO Kenya, EU in Kenya, the Kenya Judiciary, University of Nairobi, and Technical University of Kenya, among others, united by a shared commitment to advance land reforms in Kenya.
