KICC Board Chairman Irungu Nyakera has thrown his weight behind Hon. Eugene Wamalwa as a potential opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential race, describing the DAP-K Party Leader as one of the most qualified, principled, and visionary leaders in the country.
Speaking after a meeting with Wamalwa in Nairobi on Thursday, Nyakera praised the former Cabinet Minister’s long-standing public service record and called on Kenyans to reconsider their choices ahead of the next general election.
“Eugene is among the few leaders in Kenya who remain untainted, consistent, and focused on delivering results. From the Ministry of Justice to Water, and later Defence, he served with distinction and integrity,” said Nyakera.
Highlighting Wamalwa’s role in championing devolution and promoting national unity, Nyakera noted that Kenya needs leaders who prioritize constitutionalism and public interest over personal ambition.
“In a sea of noisy and populist politicians, Eugene stands out as someone who speaks sense and delivers on his mandate,” he added.
Nyakera’s remarks come amid growing dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration, which has faced criticism over its heavy tax regime, rising cost of living, and what many see as a failure to deliver on campaign promises. The government, led by President William Ruto, had campaigned on a bottom-up economic model, promising empowerment for low-income Kenyans—a vision Nyakera says has not materialized.
“Instead of a bottom-up miracle, Kenyans are experiencing a tax-heavy nightmare and an administration struggling to govern effectively. The issue is not a lack of good leaders; it’s that we keep choosing the wrong ones,” he stated.
Nyakera’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost for Wamalwa, who has maintained a low but steady political presence since serving in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet. As opposition parties weigh their 2027 strategies, Wamalwa’s name is increasingly being mentioned among potential unity candidates.
“This country has what it takes to turn around. In 2027, we must fix what’s broken by putting competent, ethical, and visionary leaders at the helm. Eugene Wamalwa must be in that conversation,” Nyakera concluded.
