In a landmark move aimed at transforming education and fostering peace along the historically volatile West Pokot–Turkana border, West Pokot Governor H.E. Simon Kachapin today presided over the official handover of Sangak Primary School in Pokot Central Sub-County.

The state-of-the-art school, constructed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) with support from the International Development Association (IDA), is designed to serve over 800 learners from Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) to primary level. It also includes modern boarding facilities to accommodate children from remote and often insecure areas, providing them with a safe, stable, and supportive learning environment.

The event drew top national and county leaders, including representatives from the Presidential Delivery Unit, the Ministry of Interior, and the State Department for Basic Education. Among the dignitaries present were Eng. Gilbert Arasa, Irene Senei, MP Peter Lochakapong (Sigor), Deputy Governor Robert Komolle, and Lumbasi Bartholomew, Director of Basic Education.

Governor Kachapin hailed the school as a beacon of hope for the region, noting its potential to reduce school dropout rates and promote lasting harmony among border communities.

“This school will be critical in building hope, opportunity, and a new beginning for our children and communities,” the Governor said.

Deputy Governor Komolle echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the importance of education in bridging long-standing social and economic disparities. He described the project as a “catalyst for peace and development.”

Eng. Arasa noted that the initiative aligns with the Government of Kenya’s broader strategy to stabilize the North Rift through investment in inclusive, community-driven infrastructure.

“Developments like Sangak Primary School are part of our collective effort to create safe, inclusive learning spaces where children from diverse backgrounds can learn, grow, and live in harmony,” Arasa said.

The ceremony also featured MCAs, CECs, Chief Officers, and other local leaders who commended the project as a powerful statement of government commitment to the region’s future.

Sangak Primary School now stands not only as a center of learning but also as a symbol of peacebuilding and progress in a region once known more for conflict than for opportunity.
