IG Kanja Meets Federation of Public Transport Sector on Key Industry Concerns

By John Kariuki

The Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, this afternoon held a high-level meeting with the Federation of Public Transport Sector (FPTS), the apex advocacy body representing the rights and interests of public service vehicle (PSV) stakeholders across Kenya.

Led by its Chairperson Mr. Edwins Mukabanah, the FPTS delegation presented several urgent issues requiring the attention of the National Police Service. These included road safety, security threats to matatu owners, crew, and passengers, compliance with traffic laws, and the efficiency of current enforcement systems and processes.

Recognizing the sector’s critical role in Kenya’s socioeconomic development and its facilitation of the daily movement of thousands of people and goods, IG Kanja emphasized the need for coordinated strategies to ensure safety, security, and efficiency in public transport operations.

He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to fostering a more effective operating environment through ongoing modernization efforts such as the automation of police systems. Key developments include the introduction of instant fines and the digital Occurrence Book, designed to enhance transparency, reduce bureaucracy, and curb corruption.

IG Kanja further assured stakeholders that the police will intensify intelligence-led patrols and targeted operations to eliminate criminal elements exploiting the matatu sector as a front for illegal activities. He called for a unified approach involving all key players to develop sustainable solutions and maintain open communication for continuous feedback and action.

Also present during the meeting from the Federation of Public Transport Sector were Mr. Michael Kariuki, Mr. Githaiga Weru, Mr. Dickson Mbugua, Mr. Kushian Muchiri, Mr. Richard Kanoru, and Hon. Wachuka Mathenge.

From the National Police Service, attendees included Mr. Mathew Kutoh SAIG, Principal Assistant to the Inspector General; Mr. Patrick Tito SAIG, Principal Deputy to the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service; Mr. Tom Odero AIG, Deputy Director of Operations; Mr. Kipkemoi Kirui AIG, Deputy Commandant Traffic; Mr. John Kamau AIG, Director of Reforms; Ms. Dorothy Migarusha CP, Deputy Director of Corporate Communications; and Mr. James Murithi SSP, Personal Assistant to the Inspector General.
