Governor Natembeya to be Arrested on Monday, Kalonzo Claims

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sensationally claimed that the government is planning to arrest Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on Monday, May 19, in what he terms as a politically motivated move to tarnish the governor’s reputation.

Speaking during a public address in Machakos on Sunday, Kalonzo alleged that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had already secured a search warrant targeting Natembeya’s properties. According to Kalonzo, the planned arrest and subsequent release are part of a wider scheme to intimidate and embarrass the outspoken county chief.

"Governor Natembeya is threatened as we speak. Tomorrow, they will search his house and apprehend him—not because of guilt, but to damage his image in the eyes of the people of Trans Nzoia," Kalonzo stated.

He warned against what he termed as the misuse of state agencies to settle political scores, claiming the move was intended to punish leaders who don’t conform to the expectations of senior figures in government. “If you’re a governor and you don’t toe the line, they send the EACC after you. The commission should not be weaponised,” he added.

Kalonzo also revealed that Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa is actively working to block the alleged arrest and protect Natembeya from what he described as political harassment.

The Trans Nzoia governor has faced increasing political pressure in recent weeks. On May 12, he was briefly blocked by police while on official duty. In April, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei called for his impeachment, accusing him of tribal politics, graft, and poor governance. Cherargei claimed that Natembeya had violated multiple articles of the Constitution and was unfit to lead.

In response, Governor Natembeya dismissed the accusations and urged Cherargei to focus on his own county’s issues. “I don't understand why a senator from Nandi County is meddling in Trans Nzoia’s affairs. Let him mind his own county,” Natembeya said on April 18.

Meanwhile, Kalonzo also condemned the recent arrest of Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, who was reportedly taken by DCI officers following a rally in Isiolo on May 16. Kalonzo said Salasya was being held at Nairobi Central Police Station without formal charges.

“They apprehended Peter Salasya for simply speaking his mind. This is an attack on freedom of expression and democratic space,” Kalonzo said.

Salasya recently declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027, joining a growing list of early aspirants.
