Governor Natembeya Condemns 'Weaponization' of State Agencies, Calls for Restoration of Institutional Integrity

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has issued a strongly worded statement decrying the alleged misuse of key national institutions, warning that the politicization of agencies such as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) poses a grave threat to Kenya’s democratic foundations.

In a press briefing held at the county headquarters in Kitale, Governor Natembeya emphasized the critical role these institutions play in upholding the rule of law, fighting corruption, and maintaining national security. He accused certain elements within the political establishment of turning these bodies into tools for political intimidation and suppression.

> “Institutions like the DCI, EACC, and NIS were not created to settle political scores. They exist to serve and protect the interests of all Kenyans, not a select few,” said Natembeya. “What we are witnessing is a dangerous trend that undermines public trust and threatens the very foundation of our democratic governance.”

The governor, a former Regional Commissioner known for his tough stance on corruption and insecurity, expressed concern that legitimate dissent and principled leadership were increasingly being met with harassment and character assassination.

> “No Kenyan should be persecuted for standing up for what is right. Equally, no one should be above the law — including those misusing public institutions for selfish ends,” he said.

Governor Natembeya called for an urgent restoration of professionalism, independence, and integrity within the country’s investigative and intelligence bodies. He stressed that democracy can only flourish when institutions operate free of political manipulation and serve the public good.

> “Kenya belongs to all of us. We will not be silenced. We will speak out, we will resist intimidation, and we will keep fighting for transparency, justice, and the true meaning of public service.”

The governor’s remarks come amid growing national debate over the role of state agencies in political affairs, with civil society groups and opposition leaders also voicing concern over increasing reports of targeted investigations and surveillance.

Natembeya’s bold statement is expected to stir further discussion on the need to insulate critical institutions from political interference and reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to democratic principles.
