Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya remains in detention following a dramatic raid on his homes and offices by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), amid an ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent acquisition of Ksh.1.4 billion in county funds.
The EACC has confirmed that the probe is focused on suspected procurement irregularities, abuse of office, and bribery linked to three major projects executed between the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 Financial Years. These projects include the rehabilitation and modernization of Kenyatta Stadium (Phase 1A), the construction of the county headquarters, and the development of Tom Mboya Hospital.
In a statement, the Commission alleged that Governor Natembeya influenced the award of tenders and received kickbacks through proxies. “The Governor is alleged to have influenced the award of tenders and received kickbacks from contractors through proxies,” EACC stated, adding that the ongoing operations are targeting offices and residences of various individuals of interest in the county.
Governor Natembeya’s legal team has decried being denied access to their client, saying the move violates his right to legal representation.
“They have locked in our client, but we are not able to access him or give him any legal counsel on the process that is currently being undertaken,” said lead counsel Njiru.
The detention and raids have sparked political outrage and public protest. Former Defence Cabinet Secretary and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa condemned the operation, accusing the government of targeting opposition figures.
“We will not allow harassment of the opposition and the weaponizing of our justice system,” Wamalwa said. “This is the same harassment being meted on other opposition leaders, including Rigathi Gachagua and Peter Salasya.”
A crowd of Natembeya’s supporters has since gathered outside EACC offices, chanting slogans and demanding the immediate release of the governor. Security around the premises remains tight as the investigation continues.
Governor Natembeya is expected to remain in custody as EACC deepens its probe into the alleged misuse of county funds.
