Chaos in Kitale as Rowdy Youths Deflate Tyres of DCI, EACC Vehicles at Governor Natembeya’s Residence

Tension gripped Kitale town on Monday after rowdy youths descended on Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s residence and vandalized government vehicles belonging to officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The irate crowd, protesting the ongoing raid and detention of Governor Natembeya, deflated the tyres of at least five government vehicles that had been stationed outside the governor’s Kitale home since early morning. Witnesses say the youth pelted the vehicles with stones and shouted slogans condemning what they termed as political harassment of their governor.

Police officers guarding the premises were momentarily overwhelmed as the protest intensified, forcing them to call for reinforcement to disperse the crowd and secure the area.

“This is our governor and we will not sit back as he is humiliated without proof. Let them bring evidence, not intimidation,” shouted one of the protestors.

The standoff comes hours after the EACC confirmed it was investigating Governor Natembeya over alleged procurement irregularities and the fraudulent acquisition of Ksh.1.4 billion. The commission has linked the case to three flagship county projects, including the construction of Tom Mboya Hospital, the county headquarters, and the rehabilitation of Kenyatta Stadium.
