From Michuki's PA to Governor: The Illustrious Career of George Natembeya

From humble beginnings as a personal assistant to the late Minister for Security John Michuki, George Natembeya has risen through the ranks of Kenya’s administrative ladder to become the Governor of Trans Nzoia County, charting a career defined by discipline, courage, and service.

Reflecting on his journey, Natembeya openly credits Michuki for shaping his leadership ethos. “Everything I know, I learned from John Michuki,” he once told a local daily, highlighting the profound influence of the late minister’s firm and no-nonsense style.

After serving as PA for four years, Natembeya was appointed District Officer and later promoted to District Commissioner in Murang’a. His tenure was marked by an aggressive crackdown on the Mungiki gang, which had been terrorizing residents. Notably, he succeeded then-DC Kenneth Lusaka, who now serves as Bungoma Governor. Natembeya’s swift and decisive action in neutralizing the gang threat gained him widespread recognition.

In 2016, under the Jubilee administration, Natembeya was appointed County Commissioner in Isiolo before being transferred to Narok. His mandate in the South Rift included the protection of the Mau Forest water towers, a mission that brought him both praise and criticism. Despite fierce political resistance, he led the eviction of over 10,000 settlers from the Mau Forest, a move seen as necessary to conserve the environment.

His tough but principled stance caught the attention of national leadership, and in June 2019, he was promoted to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, overseeing one of Kenya’s most volatile regions. It was from this high-profile post that Natembeya resigned to pursue his political ambitions.

In 2022, he was elected as Governor of Trans Nzoia, transitioning from a decorated civil servant to a political leader. His journey serves as a testament to resilience, integrity, and the power of public service in shaping Kenya’s future.

Now at the helm of Trans Nzoia County, Governor Natembeya continues to wield the values he learned early in his career — firm leadership, accountability, and a deep commitment to public service.
