In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at uplifting grassroots football, the Deputy Patron of Gor Mahia FC, Mr. Eliud Owalo, who is also Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President, engaged in strategic discussions with former Nigerian international and Chelsea FC legend, Mr. John Obi Mikel. The meeting marks the beginning of a potential partnership that could identify, nurture, and transform Kenya’s football talent.
The focus of the meeting was on building strategic partnerships through the Eliud Owalo Foundation to discover and nurture young football talent across Kenya.
Mr. Mikel, who won the UEFA Champions League and multiple English Premier League titles with Chelsea, brings a wealth of experience from global football’s highest levels.
"John Obi Mikel’s journey from the streets of Jos, Nigeria, to the world stage is a powerful example of what talent, when properly guided, can achieve," said Mr. Owalo. "We aim to replicate that success story here in Kenya."
The discussions also included linking local clubs—particularly community teams like Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards—to prospective corporate sponsors, creating sustainable funding models that will elevate the standard of the game domestically.
With the Eliud Owalo Foundation's focus on sports development and youth empowerment, this collaboration signals a new era for Kenyan football—one grounded in structure, opportunity, and international mentorship.
