Elgeyo Marakwet Empowers Farmers with Super Napier Grass to Boost Livestock and Livelihoods

In a move set to transform the lives of local farmers, the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, together with the Commodity Markets Exchange (CMX), has started distributing Super Napier Grass—affectionately known as Pakchong—to help ease the burden of rising animal feed costs and improve livestock health.

This resilient grass, which grows fast and lasts 7 to 10 years, promises to be a game-changer for farmers who have long struggled with the high prices of commercial feeds and inconsistent forage supplies. Unlike ordinary Napier grass, Super Napier matures quickly and produces more nutritious feed, giving farmers a reliable and sustainable option to support their animals.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Wisely Rotich, Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek shared how the initiative is designed with the farmers in mind. “We’ve partnered with CMX to make sure farmers not only grow this grass but also have a guaranteed market to sell their surplus. This means more income and less worry about where to turn,” she said warmly.

For farmers like Josephine Chebet from Kapsowar, the new grass represents hope. “Feeding my cows has always been a challenge during dry seasons,” she said. “With Super Napier, I look forward to healthier animals and better milk production.”

Presidential Advisor on Livestock Development, Prof. Abdi Gulie, highlighted the versatility of Super Napier Grass, explaining that it can be dried and transformed into nutritious chicken feed, offering farmers multiple ways to benefit from the crop.

Remarkably, one acre can yield up to 7,000 stacks of Super Napier, providing a plentiful supply to support a thriving livestock sector.

The launch was graced by key figures including Ms. Phyllis Kandie, Presidential Adviser on Commodity Exchange; Jacob Maaga, CEO of CMX; and Edwin Kibor, Elgeyo Marakwet’s County CEC for Agriculture and Livestock, all of whom expressed optimism about the positive impact this initiative will have on local communities.

As the sun sets over the green fields of Elgeyo Marakwet, the hope is that Super Napier Grass will not only feed animals but also nourish dreams, livelihoods, and a stronger future for the county’s hardworking farmers.
