4 Arrested, 5,000 Litres of Illicit Brew Destroyed in Kisii Raid

Police in Kisii County today intensified their fight against the illicit alcohol trade with a major crackdown in the Kiogoro area, resulting in multiple arrests and the destruction of thousands of litres of illegal brew.

Led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) from Kiogoro Police Station, the early morning operation targeted suspected dens known for the manufacture and distribution of kangara, a locally brewed illicit alcohol. Authorities confirmed the arrest of four individuals suspected to be key players in the illegal trade.

During the raid, law enforcement officers destroyed an estimated 5,000 litres of kangara and confiscated numerous pieces of brewing equipment. The suspects, now in police custody, are expected to be formally charged in court in the coming days.

Speaking after the operation, the National Police Service reiterated its commitment to ending the production and sale of illicit brews, which have been linked to serious health issues and rising crime rates in the region.

“This operation is part of an ongoing campaign to rid our communities of dangerous and illegal alcohol. We will not relent until every illicit brewer is brought to book,” said a spokesperson for the service.

Local residents welcomed the crackdown, calling it a necessary step to restore order and protect the health of the community. However, some urged authorities to complement enforcement with education and support programs aimed at providing alternative livelihoods for those involved in the illicit trade.

The police have vowed to sustain the momentum, with more raids expected in the coming weeks across Kisii County and beyond.
