Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced Monday. He passed away at 7:35 a.m. in his Vatican residence following recent health struggles, including a serious bout of double pneumonia.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Francis was elected in 2013 and known for his focus on compassion, social justice, and reform within the Catholic Church. A date for the conclave to choose his successor has not yet been set.
