The huge turnout for free medical services at the 5th edition of the Busia Cross-border run on Saturday, April 19, at Busia Polytechnic boosted the image of the event.
It was also a wake-up call to the county and national governments to have more free medical camps with vigorous publicity ahead of such free services.
Organizers of the Busia Cross-border run allocated five days to publicise the event with a truck availed by NACADA criss-crossing the county urging residents to come for free check-ups in line with the theme of the event: Health and Wealth.
Co-sponsors of the run included Gifted Hands Level 4 Regional Hospital Bugengi, Brimaxa Hospital, and Busia County Referral Hospital, which set up tents at the venue of the race.
The proprietor of Gifted Hands Regional Hospital Roseline Barasa said the screening they offered included blood pressure, HIV, malaria, and diabetes.
" At our health facility, we have multiple services we are offering to our clients whom we owe in high esteem. Our medics work around the clock to ensure our clients get the value for money.
Services offered include accident& emergency, ultrasound, digital x-ray, minor theatre, maternity theatre, laboratory, mother& baby unity, pharmacy, ICU, private wing.
Busia County Referral Hospital (BCRH) offered free immunization services, which included cervical cancer screening, non-communicable diseases, eyecare, services, pregnancy tests, and screening for papilloma, HIV/TB.
County Nursing Officer Juliet Kilima and County Clinical Officer, who led the BCRH team, said they also undertook disability assessment.
Brimaxa Hospital, the third hospital that partnered with Busia Border Marathon Foundation, paraded its health team to offer free medical services.

The event organizer, Sarah Martha, said besides athletics, hospitals that partnered with Busia Border Marathon Foundation offered free medical check-ups on various ailments.
