H.E. Flora Mbetsa Chibule Emphasizes the Importance of Women in Business at World Chambers Federation Africa Summit

The Hon. Deputy Governor of Kilifi, Her Excellency Flora Mbetsa Chibule, took the opportunity to address the vital role women play in business during a two-day World Chambers Federation Africa Summit in Nairobi. In her speech, H.E. Chibule emphasized the importance of empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities for them in the business world, particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men.

"We are not a threat to men," H.E. Chibule stated, underscoring that women already occupy significant spaces in business. "We just want to be given equal opportunities, especially in areas such as tendering and procurement." She cited her recent participation in the Women in Procurement and Supply Chain Management event, where the conversation revolved around breaking barriers and proving that women can also contribute to infrastructure projects like road construction.

Chibule highlighted that women in both rural and urban counties require more support to succeed in business. "What a woman needs is a voice, capacity building, and guidance on identifying available opportunities," she said. "They need to understand the bidding process, learn how to win contracts, and access financial support. The government and partners should provide tailored financial packages to help women thrive in business."

The Deputy Governor also stressed the importance of marketing for women entrepreneurs. "While we encourage start-ups, we must also support women-led businesses that are scaling up," she added. "This is where we want to make a real difference."

Chibule further noted the critical role of sub-national governments in facilitating business opportunities for women. During her recent participation in a Summit in Addis Ababa, she discussed the significance of regional cooperation and trade, highlighting how countries with county governments, like Kenya and Nigeria, can leverage their local resources to contribute to the continent’s economic growth.

A particularly powerful point was made when Chibule spoke about women in agriculture. Referencing the recent farmer registration campaign in Kenya, she pointed out that women are the backbone of the agricultural sector, with data showing that the majority of farmers in Kenya are women. "With such significant involvement in agriculture, why can't women complement each other in this space?" she questioned.

Chibule closed her remarks by calling on women to support one another and champion each other's success. "I’m speaking to every woman out there—let’s be our own champions and lift each other up," she concluded.

Her call to action emphasizes the importance of collective empowerment, particularly in business, where women can and should play a crucial role in shaping the future of Africa’s economy.
