Naivas Signs Landmark Deals with Seven TVET Institutions as Retailer Reveals Over 300 Youth Recruited

Retail giant Naivas Limited has formalized strategic partnerships with seven Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in a move aimed at strengthening skills development, expanding youth employment opportunities and preparing Kenyan graduates for the growing demands of the retail industry.

The partnerships were formalized through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) during a ceremony held at Naivas' head office in Nairobi on Thursday, October 23, 2026. The event was graced by the Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training and brought together education leaders, government officials and senior representatives from the retail sector.

The agreements seek to strengthen collaboration between industry and training institutions by ensuring that students acquire practical, market-relevant skills that respond to the changing needs of employers.

As part of the collaboration, Naivas has already recruited more than 300 graduates and students from the seven partner institutions into its stores across the country, demonstrating the potential of industry-led training programmes to create employment pathways for young Kenyans.

The initiative focuses particularly on developing skilled personnel for the retailer's Fresh Department, with special attention given to bakery and delicatessen (deli) operations, which require specialized technical knowledge, practical experience and adherence to industry standards.

Through the partnerships, Naivas and the participating institutions aim to ensure that training programmes are aligned with the realities of the workplace, enabling graduates to transition more smoothly from the classroom into employment.

For several years, Naivas has worked closely with the institutions to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and the practical competencies required in modern retail operations.

The retailer has involved its Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from the bakery and deli divisions in reviewing and aligning training curricula with current industry standards, operational requirements and the skills expected of employees in these specialized departments.

This approach is intended to ensure that students receive training that reflects the actual demands of the retail environment rather than relying solely on classroom instruction.

By involving industry professionals in curriculum development, the partnership seeks to strengthen the relevance of TVET education and equip learners with competencies that can improve their competitiveness in the labour market.

Students from the participating institutions have also benefited from structured industrial attachment opportunities within Naivas stores, where they gain first-hand experience in day-to-day retail operations.

The attachment programmes expose learners to professional working environments, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge, develop technical skills and understand the expectations of employers.

The practical exposure also helps students build confidence, workplace discipline and professionalism while familiarizing themselves with the operational standards required in the retail industry.

For young people entering the job market, such opportunities can provide an important foundation for career development, particularly in sectors where practical experience plays a significant role in recruitment and performance.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Naivas Chief Executive Officer Andreas Von Paleske emphasized the retailer's commitment to investing in local talent and creating meaningful career opportunities for young Kenyans.

The CEO's remarks underscored the company's approach of working with training institutions to develop a skilled workforce capable of meeting the needs of its expanding retail operations.

The formalization of the partnerships is expected to provide a stronger framework for sustained engagement between Naivas and the institutions, building on the cooperation that has already resulted in recruitment and industrial attachment opportunities.

Under the agreements, the parties will deepen collaboration in curriculum development, internship and industrial attachment programmes, recruitment initiatives, knowledge sharing and continuous engagement between the education sector and the retail industry.

The framework is also expected to strengthen communication between employers and training institutions, enabling them to identify emerging skills requirements and adjust training programmes accordingly.

Such cooperation is increasingly important as employers seek workers who possess not only academic qualifications but also the practical abilities needed to perform specific roles effectively.

The partnership places particular emphasis on ensuring that TVET graduates are prepared for employment in specialized areas of retail, including bakery and deli operations, where technical competence and adherence to operational procedures are essential.

The Principal Secretary for TVET commended the initiative, describing industry-led partnerships as an important component in ensuring that graduates acquire practical and market-relevant skills that match employers' needs.

The PS highlighted the importance of closer collaboration between businesses and training institutions in preparing young people for available employment opportunities while supporting the country's broader development objectives.

By working directly with employers, TVET institutions can gain a better understanding of changing industry requirements and incorporate relevant competencies into their training programmes.

The collaboration also provides businesses with an opportunity to contribute to the development of the workforce they need while supporting the country's efforts to strengthen vocational education and improve youth employability.

Beyond skills development and recruitment, the relationship between Naivas and the participating institutions has evolved into mutually beneficial commercial partnerships.

The institutions engage with Naivas as a supplier and retail partner, creating additional opportunities for cooperation between the education sector and private enterprise.

This arrangement is expected to support a sustainable ecosystem in which the parties benefit from their commercial relationships while contributing to skills development, employment creation and economic growth.

The development highlights how partnerships between businesses and educational institutions can extend beyond training to include wider economic relationships that support institutional sustainability and strengthen supply chains.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Naivas Executive Committee, the company's Chief Human Resources Officer, senior management teams from the participating institutions, government officials and other stakeholders drawn from the education and retail sectors.

Their participation reflected the shared interest among public institutions, employers and training providers in developing a workforce equipped to respond to the demands of Kenya's evolving economy.

The signing of the MOUs marks a formal step towards strengthening the relationship between Naivas and the seven TVET institutions, with the existing recruitment and industrial attachment programmes providing a foundation for further cooperation.

For the institutions, the partnerships offer an opportunity to strengthen the connection between their training programmes and the workplace, while students stand to benefit from improved access to practical experience and potential employment opportunities.

For Naivas, collaboration with the institutions provides a structured approach to identifying and developing talent for its stores while contributing to the availability of skilled workers in the retail sector.

The initiative comes at a time when equipping young people with practical skills and improving the transition from education to employment remain important priorities for Kenya.

TVET institutions play a significant role in preparing learners for technical and vocational careers, while partnerships with employers can help ensure that the skills acquired during training remain relevant to the needs of the labour market.

Through the formalized agreements, Naivas and the participating institutions aim to strengthen this relationship and establish a more coordinated approach to talent development.

As one of Kenya's leading retail chains, Naivas says it remains committed to youth empowerment, innovation in skills development and creating opportunities that benefit businesses and communities.

The retailer maintains that meaningful collaboration between education institutions and industry is critical to preparing the workforce required to support Kenya's future growth.

With more than 300 graduates and students already recruited through the existing collaboration, the formalization of the partnerships provides a foundation for continued engagement in training, recruitment, workplace exposure and knowledge sharing.

The long-term success of the initiative will depend on sustained cooperation between the retailer and the institutions in ensuring that training remains aligned with industry needs and that learners can access practical opportunities to build their careers.

The partnerships therefore represent an important step towards strengthening the link between vocational education and employment, while positioning skills development as a shared responsibility between training institutions and the private sector.
