MTRH Isolates One Person for Ebola Monitoring as Health Officials Urge Calm

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret has isolated one person for a 21-day monitoring period as a precaution against Ebola, with health officials urging Kenyans not to confuse quarantine with a confirmed infection.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Phillip Kirwa, said the individual was being monitored as part of precautionary public-health measures and should not be presumed to have contracted the virus.

In a statement, Dr Kirwa explained that isolation or quarantine does not automatically mean a person is infected. Individuals who may have been exposed to the virus are monitored for symptoms during the incubation period to help prevent possible transmission.

“We have no Ebola-infected patient. Quarantine is not equal to an infected person,” Dr Kirwa said.

He added that the individual would remain under monitoring for 21 days and would be released if no symptoms developed during that period.

 Kenya Strengthens Ebola Surveillance

The precautionary measures come as Kenya intensifies surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, and contact tracing following reports of confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases in the country.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), on October 16, 2026, Kenya had reported three confirmed cases, including one death. Two subsequent cases were detected among close family contacts who were already under quarantine, according to the report cited in the article.

The Ministry of Health has also stepped up monitoring of people who may have been exposed to the virus as authorities work to identify potential cases early and limit further transmission.

 What Kenyans Need to Know

Health officials are urging the public to remain calm and rely on verified information from the Ministry of Health and other authorised public-health agencies.

Being placed under quarantine or observation is a precautionary measure, not proof of infection. Monitoring helps health workers identify symptoms early and arrange testing or treatment when necessary.

Members of the public are encouraged to follow official health guidance, practise good hygiene, avoid spreading unverified reports and seek medical advice if they develop symptoms after a possible exposure.
