Bii’s Roads Revolution: Uasin Gishu Grades 4,347km of Roads, Completes 30 Bridges and Culverts
Uasin Gishu County says it has graded 4,347 kilometres of roads, gravelled more than 1,200 kilometres and completed over 30 bridges and box culverts under Governor Jonathan Bii’s infrastructure development agenda.
The projects, implemented under Pillar Six of the governor’s Nguzo Kumi agenda, are aimed at improving rural connectivity, linking farmers to markets, easing transportation and opening up the county for business.
The county government says the road network improvements are helping connect communities while supporting trade, access to essential services and economic growth across the six sub-counties.
Among the completed projects are the Ketiplong-Bindura Box Culvert in Tulwet/Chuiyat Ward, the Koisagat-Kapsabul Bridge in Segero/Barsombe Ward, the Biseria-Kipkaren Box Culvert in Olare, Ainabkoi Ward, and the Kaoni Box Culvert in Kaptagat Ward.
Other projects include the Mau-Kipkaren-Pioneer Box Culvert in Kipkenyo Ward, Seet-Ngara Falls Box Culvert in Ngeria, Eldo-Birmingham Box Culvert in Langas and Saroiyot Footbridge in Cheptiret/Kipchamo Ward.
The Kipsano-Cheptabach Footbridge, located along the border of Megun and Cheptiret/Kipchamo wards, is also among the completed projects after reportedly stalling for more than seven years.
Additional infrastructure works include the Tumoge Box Culvert in Tulwet/Chuiyat Ward, Bayete-Kabiemit Box Culvert in Tarakwa, Kapkalacha Box Culvert in Tembelio, and Kapkures-Kipsomba Box Culvert along the border of Kapkures and Kipsomba wards.
The county has also completed several projects in Kapsaos and Tapsagoi wards, among them the Barsombe-St. Peters Box Culvert, Emgwen-Tanzania Farm (Buwemba) Box Culvert, Tarus-Murgusi Bridge, Joyland-Africana Box Culvert and Kenduiywo-Jeremiah Box Culvert.
Eldoret Asphalt Plant Nears Completion
In a further push to improve road infrastructure, the county is establishing an asphalt processing plant in Eldoret City, which Governor Bii says is 96 per cent complete.
The facility is expected to support the tarmacking of roads in Eldoret and six new municipalities: Kesses, Burnt Forest, Mois Bridge, Ziwa, Turbo (Cheramei) and Moiben.
According to Governor Bii, the plant will improve construction efficiency, enhance road durability and reduce road construction costs by up to 50 per cent.
“My administration has also enhanced transportation and pedestrian safety through the installation of traffic lights on major streets,” the governor said.
The asphalt plant is provided for in the County Integrated Development Plan 2023–2027 and forms part of the administration’s infrastructure development and public works agenda.
New Bus Park to Ease Eldoret Congestion
County Executive Committee Member for Roads, Transport and Public Works Abraham Serem said the administration had established a new bus park serving matatu Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (Saccos) operating along the Eldoret-Langas route and other eastern routes.
The county has also renovated the Iten-Chepkoilel bus park as part of efforts to improve public transport management and ease congestion in Eldoret City.
Meanwhile, Chief Officer for Roads Geoffrey Tanui said the county had strengthened its Fire and Rescue Department through the commissioning of two water bowsers, each with a capacity of 16,000 litres.
The bowsers can draw water from open sources, boosting the department’s capacity to respond to emergencies and fires.
The county government says the investments in roads, bridges, public transport and emergency response services are part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and stimulate economic growth across Uasin Gishu.
