Roseline Njogu’s diaspora agenda gains fresh impetus as Kenya launches investment platform

Kenya’s efforts to deepen the contribution of citizens living abroad to national development have received a major boost following the unveiling of the Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform, a new initiative seeking to connect the diaspora with credible investment and development opportunities at home.

The platform was unveiled in New York on Sunday during a Presidential Diaspora Engagement attended by President William Ruto, senior Government officials, development partners and hundreds of Kenyans living in the United States.

Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu was among senior Government officials who attended the engagement, which also witnessed the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent between the Government of Kenya, the United Nations in Kenya and Equity Group Holdings. 

The declaration was signed by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi on behalf of the Government, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Garry Conille for the United Nations and Equity Group Holdings Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr James Mwangi for Equity.

The initiative represents an effort to create more structured avenues through which Kenyans abroad can participate in the country's development beyond traditional remittance flows.

According to the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, the digital platform will link Kenyans and other diaspora-based investors with credible and verifiable investment and development opportunities in Kenya.

It will provide pathways for participation in community-impact projects, catalytic financing for micro, small and medium enterprises, enterprise development, philanthropy, as well as skills and knowledge transfer. 

For Ms Njogu, whose State Department is mandated to connect diaspora skills, investments and remittances to national development, the development represents another step towards building stronger institutional links between Kenyans abroad and opportunities at home.

The State Department identifies investment, skills transfer, remittances, employment opportunities and structured engagement with diaspora communities among its core areas of responsibility. 

President Ruto said the platform would enable Kenyans abroad to play a more direct role in the country's transformation agenda by connecting them to opportunities where they can contribute to community projects, enterprise creation, MSME financing and knowledge transfer.

He said the Government was seeking to build a stronger bridge between Kenyans abroad and opportunities in Kenya, anchored on trust, transparency and measurable results. 

The New York engagement was significant because it brought together Government and non-State actors around a common objective of expanding the role of the diaspora in Kenya's economic and social development.

The presence of international and private-sector partners also signals an approach that seeks to combine Government coordination with investment expertise and development partnerships.

The platform comes against the backdrop of the Kenya Diaspora Policy 2024, which sets out four broad objectives, including protecting the rights and welfare of Kenyans abroad, facilitating diaspora savings, investments, remittances and technology transfer, strengthening partnerships with the diaspora and facilitating access to international employment opportunities.

Ms Njogu, in her capacity as Principal Secretary, is listed in the policy document as its principal secretary and played a role in presenting the policy framework for Kenya's engagement with its diaspora.

The latest initiative therefore places greater emphasis on turning diaspora goodwill, capital, expertise and global networks into structured development opportunities.

Beyond sending money home, Kenyans abroad will have opportunities to participate in enterprise development, community projects, philanthropy and knowledge transfer through more formal channels.

The State Department has also been pursuing broader diaspora engagement through town-hall meetings, thematic engagements, investment initiatives and partnerships aimed at creating stronger links between Kenyans abroad and institutions at home. 

At the New York meeting, the President also briefed Kenyans on priority Government programmes in healthcare, food security, job creation, education and affordable housing, with presentations from senior officials in various sectors.

The engagement underscored the increasingly strategic place of the diaspora in Kenya's development conversation.

With the Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform now taking shape, the focus will shift towards implementation and ensuring that Kenyans abroad can access reliable information, credible opportunities and transparent mechanisms for participating in projects that have measurable impact.

For the State Department for Diaspora Affairs under Ms Njogu, the initiative adds another important pillar to the broader effort to position the diaspora not merely as a source of remittances, but as a partner in investment, innovation, skills transfer and national development.
