Murkomen Vows to Institutionalise Jukwaa La Wasomi to Boost Security in Colleges

 

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged to institutionalise Jukwaa La Wasomi, saying the initiative has strengthened security and safety in institutions of higher learning across the country.

Murkomen said the platform has created a structured space where student leaders, institutional management and security agencies work together to identify security challenges, prevent crime, resolve conflicts and promote peaceful learning environments.

He said the Ministry is developing a multi-agency framework to ensure Jukwaa La Wasomi becomes an established part of security management in universities, TVETs, colleges and other institutions.

“We will put in place a proper framework for the institutionalisation of Jukwaa La Wasomi,” Murkomen said.

The CS said the move is part of the government’s broader efforts to devolve security management and strengthen community policing by giving citizens a greater role in decisions affecting their safety.

He noted that student leaders and institutional managers had also been integrated into sub-county security committees, allowing students to directly participate in discussions on their security.

“For the first time, the voice of students will be at the table where decisions about their safety are made,” he said.

Murkomen spoke during the graduation of Jukwaa La Wasomi Certified Professional Mediators at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi.

He said the trained mediators will support efforts to combat drug and substance abuse in learning institutions, promote cohesion and encourage peaceful conflict resolution.

The CS also launched the Kenya National Mediation Hub, which is expected to connect more than 30,000 university, TVET, college and school-based mediation hubs with National Government Administration Officers and other relevant agencies.

The initiative is expected to strengthen early intervention, conflict resolution and security coordination within learning institutions across the country.
