Kiborek Takes Aim at Sifuna Over Nairobi Roads, Questions Senator’s Oversight

Mogotio Member of Parliament Reuben Kiborek has hit back at Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over remarks concerning the state of roads in Nairobi and the Kenyan delegation’s movements in New York.

Kiborek, who has been the MP for Mogotio since 2022, questioned Sifuna’s criticism of Nairobi’s infrastructure, arguing that the senator has a responsibility to provide oversight on matters affecting the capital city. 

The lawmaker said he had heard Sifuna comment on President William Ruto and the Kenyan delegation walking through the streets of New York, with the senator reportedly contrasting the well-paved streets in the American city with the condition of roads in Nairobi.

Kiborek challenged Sifuna to demonstrate the same level of attention to Nairobi’s infrastructure challenges, given his position as the city’s senator.

> “Mr. Edwin, if Nairobi’s streets need better oversight, then you are the Nairobi Senator. Where is your oversight?”

He accused the senator of being more visible at political rallies and convoys across Nairobi than in efforts to address the city’s infrastructure problems.

Kiborek also questioned what he described as a contradiction in Sifuna’s previous criticism of government development projects.

According to Kiborek, Sifuna has previously argued that President Ruto should focus on issues beyond what he described as “shiny things” such as roads and Talanta Stadium, saying infrastructure alone was not sufficient.

The Mogotio MP asked whether the same infrastructure could be dismissed when developed in Kenya but praised indirectly when seen in cities such as New York.

“Are roads, hospitals, schools and stadiums only ‘shiny things’ when President Ruto builds them in Kenya, but suddenly become evidence of a functioning city when you see them in America?” Kiborek posed.

He said Nairobi residents needed practical solutions to challenges affecting the city rather than what he termed selective criticism of the government.

Kiborek is a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and serves in the National Assembly representing Mogotio Constituency. Parliamentary records list him among the current members of the 13th Parliament. 

His remarks add to the growing political debate over Nairobi’s infrastructure, service delivery and the role of elected leaders in overseeing development in the capital.
