Eldoret High Court has ordered police constable Nathan Kirwa to undergo a mental assessment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital on September 28, ahead of his scheduled murder plea on October 1.

Kirwa was arrested about three weeks ago in connection with the alleged shooting of Eldoret-based nurse Doris Murei at a General Service Unit (GSU) camp within the Eldoret State Lodge.

The court directed that the mental assessment be conducted before Kirwa is presented for plea-taking in the murder case.

The court has also ordered the State to facilitate legal representation for Kirwa by providing him with a pro bono lawyer.

The September 28 assessment is expected to establish whether Kirwa is fit to proceed with the court process ahead of the October 1 plea.

The case will continue to draw attention as the court determines the next steps following the alleged shooting of Murei.
