United Alternative Government Principals Seal Unity Pact Ahead of 2027 Election

 Leaders of the United Alternative Government have taken a major step towards consolidating Kenya’s opposition forces after signing a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement that commit them to remain united and support a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.

The agreement was signed on Monday at the Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County, where the coalition’s principals held extensive consultations on how to strengthen their political alliance and present Kenyans with what they described as a credible, democratic and transformative alternative government.

The leaders said their decision was driven by the need to place the national interest above individual political ambitions, historical differences and partisan considerations as they prepare for the next General Election.

The principals who signed the agreement include Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, Justin Muturi, Eugene Wamalwa, Peter Munya, Lenny Kivuti and Omingo Magara, while Cleophas Malala signed on behalf of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a joint statement, the leaders said they had reached the agreement after “extensive and candid consultations,” describing it as an important transition in their political journey.

The coalition said millions of Kenyans were increasingly looking beyond individual politicians and political parties and were instead seeking an alternative leadership capable of addressing the country’s challenges and putting the public interest first.

“Our answer today is unequivocal: Kenya comes first,” the principals said.

Commitment to a single candidate

At the centre of the agreement is a commitment by all the principals to participate faithfully in a process for selecting the coalition’s presidential candidate.

The leaders have agreed that the process must be fair, transparent and credible, with every principal expected to respect the collective decision once the candidate is selected.

The Personal Unity Pledge requires each principal to commit individually and collectively to the coalition’s decisions. The leaders have further undertaken to give the eventual presidential nominee their full political support, strength and resources in the campaign for the 2027 election.

This means that the principal who ultimately emerges as the coalition’s presidential candidate will be expected to receive the backing of the other leaders, even if they had initially hoped to secure the nomination themselves.

The agreement is aimed at preventing the kind of internal disagreements that have historically weakened broad opposition alliances during election periods.

The principals have specifically undertaken not to undermine the selected candidate, sponsor rival candidacies or engage in activities intended to fragment the coalition.

The commitment is significant because the coalition brings together several senior politicians, many of whom have previously contested or been associated with presidential and national leadership bids.

A pledge against political fragmentation

The leaders described their undertaking as more than an ordinary political agreement among politicians.

“We have chosen to walk it together,” the statement declares.

By signing the agreement before the candidate is selected, the principals have sought to bind themselves to the outcome of that process and reassure supporters that the coalition will remain intact even after one candidate is chosen.

Opposition seeks broader national appeal

For now, the principals insist that they have chosen a different path.

They say their common objective is to build a united political alternative capable of winning the confidence of Kenyans and translating that confidence into a new government after the 2027 election.

The message from the Windsor Hotel meeting was therefore clear: the coalition intends to put the country before individual political ambitions and remain united behind whoever is ultimately chosen to lead its presidential campaign.
