Tophill Hospital Raises Alarm Over Rising Brain, Spine Injuries Linked to Motorcycle Crashes
Tophill Hospital has raised concern over the growing number of brain and spinal injuries being reported at the facility, with motorcycle crashes emerging as a major contributor to life-changing trauma.
The hospital’s CEO and Lead Surgeon, Dr. Florentius Koech, has urged motorcycle riders and the general public to embrace preventive measures, warning that simple safety precautions such as wearing helmets could mean the difference between life and death.
According to Dr. Koech, motorcycle-related accidents continue to expose riders and passengers to severe head and spinal injuries, some of which result in permanent disability and place a heavy emotional and financial burden on families.
“Helmet use, responsible riding and observing speed limits are not optional—they are life-saving measures,” the hospital cautioned.
Beyond accident-related trauma, Tophill Hospital says it is also witnessing an increase in non-traumatic brain and spine conditions, including brain and spinal infections such as tuberculosis, brain and spine tumours, and degenerative spinal diseases.
The emerging trend, Dr. Koech said, underscores the importance of prevention, early detection and timely medical intervention.
Motorcycle Riders Urged to Prioritise Safety
The hospital has called on motorcycle riders to always wear approved helmets, observe speed limits, practise safe riding and ensure they are properly licensed.
Dr. Koech said these measures can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in the event of an accident.
Protecting the Spine at Work
The hospital has also urged office workers and people who spend long hours at desks to take spinal health seriously.
Maintaining proper sitting posture, using ergonomic chairs and workstations, and taking regular breaks to stand, stretch and move can help reduce the risk of long-term spinal problems.
Workers have further been advised to lift heavy objects correctly by bending their knees instead of their backs and avoiding sudden or improper lifting, which can contribute to slipped or herniated discs and other spinal injuries.
Healthy Lifestyle Key to Strong Bones
Tophill Hospital is also encouraging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles to support brain, bone and spinal health.
A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, regular physical activity and avoiding unnecessary exposure to harmful chemicals such as pesticides are among the measures recommended by the hospital.
Dr. Koech emphasised that prevention should begin long before a person develops a serious condition.
The hospital says increased public awareness can play a crucial role in reducing preventable injuries and encouraging people to seek medical attention when symptoms emerge.
“Prevention is the best medicine,” Tophill Hospital said, urging families, motorists, riders, employers and communities to make brain and spine health a priority.
With motorcycle use continuing to play a major role in transport, particularly in urban and rural communities, the hospital’s message is clear: a helmet, a safe decision and early medical attention could prevent a lifetime of disability.
