RMS Newsroom Exodus? Top Journalists Linked to 2027 Political Seats

Royal Media Services (RMS) could witness a major talent shift ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several of its prominent journalists and presenters reportedly eyeing elective political seats across the country.

Among those linked to political ambitions are Citizen TV anchor Trevor Ombija, who is reportedly interested in the Nyakach parliamentary seat, while Lulu Hassan has been linked to the Mvita MP race. 

Stephen Letoo is also associated with the Kilgoris parliamentary race in Narok County, where he has increasingly featured in political discussions. Michael Njenga of Inooro TV is reportedly targeting the Kabete MP seat, while Mwanahamisi Hamadi of Citizen TV is linked to the Likoni parliamentary seat.

Tina Ogal of Radio Citizen is reportedly eyeing the Embakasi East MP position, having already been associated with political activities and the ODM party. 

Meanwhile, Nancy Kwamboka Omweri of Egesa FM is being linked to the Nyamira gubernatorial race.

The list has also been boosted by former Citizen TV journalist John Wanyama, who has already left RMS to pursue the Malava parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections. Wanyama submitted his resignation in July, with his final working day reported as August 4, 2026. 

The growing number of journalists transitioning into politics comes as media practitioners prepare for the 2027 political season, raising renewed questions about the delicate balance between journalism, political ambitions and editorial independence.

RMS had reportedly directed journalists and presenters intending to contest in the 2027 elections to resign, in a move aimed at avoiding conflicts of interest as the country moves closer to the polls. 

If the reported bids materialise, RMS could become one of the biggest sources of media personalities entering Kenya's 2027 political arena.
