Rebecca Miano: A Transformational Force Driving Kenya’s Tourism Growth
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, stands out as one of the women leaders playing a pivotal role in Kenya’s economic transformation, with her leadership increasingly positioning tourism as a powerful engine of jobs, investment, foreign exchange and inclusive growth.
Her recognition by Politrack Africa among the top women leaders driving Kenya’s economic growth is a fitting reflection of the impact being witnessed across the tourism sector. Under Miano’s stewardship, Kenya has continued to strengthen its position as a competitive global destination while broadening the range of tourism products available to both international and domestic travellers.
The numbers tell a compelling story. Kenya recorded 2.76 million international visitor arrivals in the 2025/26 financial year, an increase of 9.8 per cent, while tourism earnings reached a record KSh564 billion, surpassing the ministry’s KSh529 billion target.
These gains underscore Miano’s emphasis on product diversification, aggressive international marketing, new tourism markets and improved visitor experiences Her approach has also placed greater attention on emerging segments such as cruise tourism, MICE tourism, cultural tourism and digital innovation.
Cruise tourism provides a particularly strong example. Kenya recorded 140 per cent growth in the sector by the end of 2025, while the government introduced a multiple-entry Electronic Travel Authorization for cruise passengers to make their movement between vessels and mainland attractions easier.
Miano has also demonstrated that effective tourism leadership must go beyond traditional safari marketing. Her vision is increasingly about presenting a diversified Kenya—from the beaches and wildlife of the Coast to cultural experiences, conferences, adventure, heritage and urban tourism.
Her leadership comes at a time when tourism is becoming even more important to Kenya's economic ambitions. The 2025 sector performance figures showed 7.9 million total visitors, comprising 2.7 million international visitors and 5.2 million domestic travellers, with tourism earnings reaching approximately KSh500 billion.
What makes Miano particularly commendable is her ability to connect tourism with the wider national development agenda. She has consistently championed a sector that creates opportunities not only for large hotels and established operators, but also for women, young people, small businesses, communities and entrepreneurs across Kenya.
Her recent engagement on proposed reforms to tourism funds further demonstrates an interest in strengthening governance, efficiency and accountability within the sector.
From expanding Kenya's global tourism footprint to promoting new products and strengthening the institutional framework supporting the industry, Rebecca Miano is helping give Kenyan tourism a more ambitious, modern and economically transformative identity.
Her inclusion among the women recognised by Politrack Africa therefore carries significant weight. She represents a new generation of leadership where women are not merely participating in economic transformation but are actively shaping its direction and delivering measurable results.
Rebecca Miano’s story is ultimately one of purposeful leadership: turning Kenya’s extraordinary tourism assets into economic opportunities, global visibility and better livelihoods for millions of Kenyans.
