Murkomen Accuses Uhuru of Misleading Kalonzo, Sifuna and Matiang’i Over 2027 Presidential Plans

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of misleading opposition leaders by giving them the impression that they could be his preferred presidential candidates in the 2027 General Election.

Murkomen claimed that Kenyatta was misleading Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over their presidential ambitions.

According to Murkomen, the former President was using political manoeuvres to keep opposition leaders within his camp while creating uncertainty over who would ultimately receive his backing for the presidency.

The Interior CS also revisited the political experiences of former Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, claiming that Kenyatta had previously made him believe he was being positioned as a potential presidential candidate.

Murkomen's remarks add a new dimension to the increasingly intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition leaders exploring possible coalitions and presidential bids.

The CS questioned the credibility of promises allegedly being made by Kenyatta, urging political leaders to carefully assess their alliances and the interests behind emerging political partnerships.

He particularly singled out Kalonzo, Sifuna and Matiang’i, warning that they could be misled into believing they have secured the backing of the former President for their presidential ambitions.

Murkomen's claims come as political activity gathers momentum across the country, with various leaders holding consultations and positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral contest.

The Interior CS's remarks also highlight the emerging contest over political influence within opposition circles, where several senior figures are expected to seek a common platform to challenge President William Ruto's administration.

Kenyatta has remained influential in national politics despite leaving office in 2022, while Kalonzo has previously expressed interest in succeeding President Ruto.

Matiang’i, who served in Kenyatta's administration, has also increasingly featured in discussions surrounding the opposition's possible presidential line-up, while Sifuna remains a prominent figure within ODM and the wider opposition movement.

Murkomen did not provide details of the alleged commitments Kenyatta has made to the leaders, but maintained that the opposition figures should be cautious about relying on political assurances.
