2027 Trans Nzoia Senate Race Heats Up as New Heavyweights Target Allan Chesang's Seat

The battle for the Trans Nzoia Senate seat in the 2027 General Election is gathering momentum, with several high-profile politicians and professionals joining the race, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be one of the county's most competitive contests.

Incumbent Senator Allan Chesang, who is seeking a second term, is expected to face stiff competition from a growing list of aspirants, including Trans Nzoia County Assembly Deputy Speaker Obed Mwale, former County Executive Committee Member for Youth, Culture, Sports and Tourism Stanley Kirui, Football Kenya Federation official Isaac Munene, lawyer Musoke Muliro, university lecturer Paul Wanaswa, and grassroots philanthropist Dr. Elijah Makokha, popularly known as Makondoo.

Political observers say the entry of the new contenders has significantly altered the county's political landscape, with each aspirant seeking to capitalize on changing alliances and shifting voter sentiments ahead of the August 10, 2027 polls.

The race is also expected to be influenced by the long-running political differences between Senator Chesang and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, as well as other emerging rivalries among influential leaders in the county.

Former CECM Stanley Kirui, who is positioning himself for the UDA nominations, has intensified his grassroots engagements while calling for inclusive leadership based on the principles of the historic Mabanga Accord.

According to Kirui, the agreement promoted peace, fairness, and shared leadership among communities in Western Kenya through negotiated democracy.

He urged residents from the Bukusu, Sabaot, Iteso, Tachoni and Batura communities to embrace unity by ensuring equitable sharing of political positions and public resources.

"By dividing political seats and jobs fairly among all ethnic groups in counties like Bungoma and Trans Nzoia, peace and unity will thrive instead of causing tribal fights and political tension," Kirui said, adding that harmony remains the foundation for sustainable development.

Kirui also cautioned politicians against relying on staged photographs with national leaders as a campaign strategy.

He argued that modern voters are increasingly evaluating leaders based on tangible development records rather than perceived proximity to power.

According to him, manipulated or carefully staged political imagery often backfires by portraying desperation instead of genuine leadership achievements.

"I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but elections will be decided by voter mobilization and policies that improve people's lives. No photo opportunity can replace real service delivery," he said.

Deputy Speaker Obed Mwale, who enjoys the backing of Governor George Natembeya, has also intensified his campaigns, banking on his two-term experience as Matisi Ward MCA and his legislative record at the County Assembly.

Mwale says Trans Nzoia deserves a senator who fully understands oversight and national representation while championing youth empowerment and accountability.

He has expressed confidence that the county is ready for new leadership in the Senate.

Lawyer Musoke Muliro, son of independence hero the late Masinde Muliro, has also entered the contest, hoping to build on his father's legacy of multiparty democracy, justice and social equity.

Musoke previously contested the Senate seat on an ODM ticket in the 2022 General Election and is reportedly considering another political vehicle for his 2027 bid.

He has been urging residents to embrace reforms and elect leadership committed to protecting public interests.

University lecturer Paul Wanaswa believes changing demographics could reshape the outcome of the election.

He argues that young voters, who make up a significant proportion of the county's electorate, are increasingly demanding issue-based leadership and could determine the next senator.

According to Wanaswa, the youth vote will play a decisive role in the election, especially amid the growing momentum of opposition politics in the region.

Political analysts also point to Senator Chesang's ongoing political differences with Governor Natembeya and Endebess MP Dr. Robert Pukose as factors likely to influence the contest.

The rivalry between Chesang and Dr. Pukose is widely viewed as extending beyond party politics to questions of regional influence and leadership within the Sabaot community.

Dr. Pukose has represented Endebess Constituency since 2013 and has built a strong grassroots network, while Senator Chesang enjoys countywide visibility through legislative work, youth engagement initiatives and his Allan Chesang Foundation.

Analysts argue that should Dr. Pukose support an alternative candidate from the Sabaot community, including Stanley Kirui, the political arithmetic within the county could change significantly.

Although both leaders belong to the Kenya Kwanza coalition and UDA, observers note that competition over local political influence has occasionally placed them on opposing sides despite working together on some national issues.

Kirui, whose late grandmother Mama Meza was a respected traditional birth attendant in Kwanza and is remembered for assisting in the birth of Dr. Robert Pukose in 1972, is believed by some local observers to enjoy longstanding personal ties with the MP.

Political commentators, however, note that any endorsements remain speculative unless publicly confirmed.

Grassroots philanthropist Dr. Elijah Makokha, popularly known as Makondoo, and Football Kenya Federation official Isaac Munene are also expected to inject fresh competition into the race by appealing to youth and community networks across the county.

Media analyst Amos Musungu believes early campaigns, grassroots mobilization and community alliances will play a decisive role in determining the winner.

He also encouraged young people to register for national identity cards to enable them to participate in the 2027 elections.

With more than a year remaining before Kenyans head to the polls, the Trans Nzoia Senate contest is already emerging as one of the county's most closely watched political battles, as established leaders and new entrants position themselves for a highly competitive race.
