Kilifi Deepens Disability Inclusion Through Landmark Partnership on Assistive Technology
Kilifi County has taken a significant step towards advancing disability inclusion following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the County Government and The Accessibility Institute (TAI), a partnership that is expected to transform the lives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through improved access to assistive technology and essential support services.
The agreement, signed by Kilifi Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa Chibule and representatives of The Accessibility Institute led by Regina Muche, underscores the county's commitment to building an inclusive society where every resident has an equal opportunity to live with dignity, independence and full participation in community life.
The Accessibility Institute, located at Kilifi Plantation in Mnarani Ward, has established itself as an innovative centre dedicated to designing and producing assistive devices that improve mobility, accessibility and quality of life for Persons with Disabilities.
The partnership builds on discussions initiated during Deputy Governor Chibule's visit to the institute's workshop last year, demonstrating her commitment to translating engagements with stakeholders into tangible programmes that directly benefit residents.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the County Government of Kilifi and The Accessibility Institute will jointly design, manufacture and supply a wide range of assistive devices and equipment aimed at improving mobility, independence and social inclusion for Persons with Disabilities across the county.
The collaboration is expected to expand access to high-quality assistive technology while reducing barriers that often prevent Persons with Disabilities from accessing education, healthcare, employment and other essential services.
Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa Chibule has continued to distinguish herself as a passionate advocate for inclusive development, championing policies and partnerships that ensure no member of society is left behind. Her leadership reflects the understanding that sustainable development can only be achieved when every citizen, regardless of physical ability, has an equal opportunity to contribute to and benefit from economic and social progress.
By prioritising disability inclusion, she continues to demonstrate compassionate and visionary leadership that places people at the centre of development. Her commitment extends beyond policy pronouncements to practical interventions that improve lives and strengthen social protection systems for vulnerable members of the community.
The partnership also reflects the County Government's broader agenda of leveraging strategic collaborations to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to local development challenges. By working closely with specialised institutions such as The Accessibility Institute, Kilifi County is harnessing expertise and innovation to improve service delivery while promoting locally driven solutions.
Access to assistive technology remains one of the most effective ways of empowering Persons with Disabilities to lead independent lives. Appropriate assistive devices enhance mobility, improve communication, increase access to education and employment, and enable greater participation in community life. The new partnership therefore represents a major investment in human dignity, equality and social justice.
The initiative further aligns with Kenya's constitutional commitment to protecting the rights of Persons with Disabilities as well as the country's obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the pledge to leave no one behind.
Deputy Governor Chibule has consistently championed programmes that promote gender equality, social inclusion and community empowerment, making her one of the county's leading voices on inclusive governance. Her ability to build meaningful partnerships continues to position Kilifi as a model county in advancing people-centred development.
As implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding begins, thousands of Persons with Disabilities across Kilifi County stand to benefit from improved access to assistive devices that will enhance their independence, restore dignity and unlock new opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship.
The partnership with The Accessibility Institute is more than a formal agreement—it is a powerful statement that inclusion is not an aspiration but a practical commitment requiring collaboration, innovation and sustained investment.
Through the visionary leadership of Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa Chibule, Kilifi County continues to demonstrate that true development is measured not only by infrastructure and economic growth but also by the extent to which society empowers its most vulnerable members. This landmark collaboration reinforces the county's determination to build a future where every resident, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive, participate and realise their full potential.
