Iten Affordable Housing Project Takes Shape as ‘Home of Champions’ Expands

The Iten Affordable Housing Project in Iten Town, Elgeyo Marakwet County, is steadily taking shape as the government moves to address growing demand for decent and affordable housing in the globally renowned “Home of Champions.”

Iten, widely recognised as one of the world’s leading high-altitude training destinations, continues to attract elite athletes, coaches, sports professionals and visitors from across Kenya and around the world. The growing sports tourism industry has contributed to rapid urban growth, increasing pressure on housing and essential services within the town.

The affordable housing project is expected to help accommodate the expanding population while supporting the town’s planned growth as a major sports, tourism and business hub.

Construction has now reached the structural and masonry stage, with the main concrete framework completed on the lower floors. External wall construction is actively underway as contractors push ahead with the development.

The project comprises four five-storey residential blocks, designed as ground floor plus four upper floors, and will deliver a total of 228 housing units. It will also include two commercial spaces aimed at supporting small businesses and bringing services closer to residents.

Beyond providing homes, the project is creating employment opportunities for local residents, particularly young people. Workers are gaining hands-on construction experience and practical skills that can support future employment in the building and construction sector.

The development will be supported by key amenities to ensure a safe, sustainable and well-serviced living environment. These include a gatehouse, power house, waste management facilities and a wastewater treatment plant.

The project is being implemented under coordinated oversight by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, with a focus on compliance, orderly development and smooth integration into Iten Town’s planned expansion.

Once completed, the housing project is expected to strengthen Iten’s urban infrastructure and provide a modern residential option for families, workers and professionals who continue to make the high-altitude town their home.

I can also turn this into a shorter Facebook post or a more formal government-style press release.
