Fake Nairobi County Officer Learns Costly Lesson After Bribery Scheme Lands Him in Court

A man who allegedly posed as a Nairobi City County enforcement officer to exploit a motorist seeking help has been convicted and fined after an anti-corruption court found him guilty of bribery and impersonation.

Osborne Juma Olande was sentenced by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court after investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed that he had falsely presented himself as an officer attached to the Nairobi City County Inspectorate Department.

According to the findings presented before the court, Olande used the fake identity to convince a complainant that he had the authority to secure the release of an impounded motorcycle. The deception allegedly led the motorist to part with money believing he was dealing with a legitimate county official.

The court found Olande guilty on four counts of receiving bribes and one count of impersonation after prosecutors established that he had misrepresented himself as a county employee with powers to intervene in the matter.

The accused was fined a total of KSh237,000 for the five offences. The court further ruled that he would serve a jail term of up to one year in default if he fails to pay the fines imposed.

The conviction serves as a warning to individuals who exploit public institutions and use fake positions of authority to take advantage of members of the public.

The EACC said the case highlights the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation from citizens in reporting suspected corruption and fraudulent activities.

The anti-graft agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public trust by pursuing individuals who engage in bribery, impersonation and other forms of corruption that undermine service delivery.

The ruling also comes amid continued efforts by authorities to address corruption-related offences and ensure that only genuine public officers exercise government authority.

For motorists and members of the public seeking government services, officials have urged caution and encouraged them to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a public institution before making any payments or accepting assistance.
