Affordable Housing Programme Takes Centre Stage at BuildExpo Africa 2026

The Affordable Housing Board has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality and affordable homes while driving jobs, investment and innovation across Kenya.

Speaking during the official opening of the 27th BuildExpo Africa in Nairobi, Affordable Housing Board Chief Executive Officer Joe Mutugu said the Affordable Housing Programme is transforming communities and creating new economic opportunities for Kenyans.

The expo brought together industry leaders, manufacturers, investors, contractors, suppliers and innovators from across the region to showcase emerging construction technologies, products and solutions.

Mutugu said the government’s housing agenda goes beyond providing homes, noting that it is also supporting local manufacturing, creating employment opportunities and opening up space for businesses to participate in national development.

“The Affordable Housing Programme is more than a housing initiative. It is creating jobs, supporting local manufacturing, fostering innovation and unlocking opportunities for businesses and communities across Kenya,” he said.

He noted that more than 270,000 housing units are currently at different stages of construction across the country, creating opportunities for manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, financiers and technology partners.

According to Mutugu, the programme is expected to continue stimulating demand for locally produced building materials while encouraging the adoption of modern, sustainable and cost-effective construction methods.

The Affordable Housing Board said it will continue working closely with private-sector players and other stakeholders to accelerate housing delivery, promote sustainable construction and improve the quality of life for millions of Kenyans.

The Board maintained that strong partnerships will be central to achieving the country’s housing goals and ensuring that more families access decent and affordable homes.

“Together, we are building more than homes; we are building stronger communities, creating jobs and shaping a more prosperous future for our nation,” Mutugu said.

The 27th BuildExpo Africa is expected to provide a key platform for stakeholders in the construction and housing sector to explore partnerships, investment opportunities and innovative solutions that can support Kenya’s growing demand for affordable housing.
