Ruto Defends Decision to Establish Quarantine Facility in Nanyuki Amid Public Backlash
By Emmanuel Kipkorir
President William Ruto has defended the government's decision to establish a quarantine facility in Nanyuki following widespread criticism and protests from residents and other Kenyans concerned about the potential risks associated with handling deadly viruses.
Tension gripped Nanyuki on Monday as hundreds of residents took to the streets to oppose the planned facility, expressing fears that it could expose the country to dangerous infectious diseases. The protests reflected growing public concern over the government's partnership with international allies in managing high-risk health threats.
Addressing the nation during a media engagement on Monday evening, President Ruto sought to reassure Kenyans that the facility is a precautionary measure aimed at strengthening the country's preparedness and response to potential disease outbreaks.
The Head of State revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump had requested Kenya's support in the global fight against deadly viruses, a request that Kenya agreed to in the interest of international health security.
“Those questioning our preparedness, are they telling us that we should not be ready? The fact that we could end up with a case is not far-fetched. We have many Kenyans in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and if they were to become victims of Ebola, we would have a responsibility to take care of them,” Ruto said.
The President emphasized that Kenya cannot afford to ignore emerging health threats and must be adequately prepared to protect its citizens both at home and abroad.
Ruto further defended the government's cooperation with Western partners, noting that Kenya's relationship with the United States has been built over decades and remains beneficial to both nations.
“Our partnership with the American government is a mutual agreement. When President Trump asked Kenya to support them by establishing a center at the Laikipia Air Base, I gave the okay because of our long-standing friendship spanning over 40 years,” he stated.
The President maintained that the quarantine facility would enhance Kenya's capacity to respond to infectious diseases and strengthen regional health security. However, critics continue to demand greater public consultation and transparency regarding the project's implementation and safety measures.
As debate over the facility continues, the government faces the challenge of balancing public concerns with its commitment to global health preparedness and international cooperation.
