Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday visited students who were admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 students.

Sonko spent time with the injured survivors, many of whom are still receiving treatment after sustaining burns, injuries, and shock while attempting to escape the raging dormitory fire.

Visibly moved by the accounts shared by the students, Sonko said he was deeply saddened by their pain and trauma, describing the incident as one of the most heartbreaking tragedies to affect school-going children in recent years.

“I am truly heartbroken after listening to what these young girls went through. No child should ever experience such fear and suffering in a place that is supposed to be safe,” he said.

The former governor arrived at the hospital carrying flowers, essential supplies, and comfort items meant to encourage the survivors and remind them that they are not alone during their recovery journey.

He spent time speaking individually with some of the students, offering words of encouragement and assuring them of continued support as they heal physically and emotionally from the incident.

Sonko also extended his condolences to the families who lost their daughters in the tragic fire, describing the loss as devastating and irreversible.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to all the families who lost their children. This is a pain no parent should ever go through. May God give them strength during this difficult time,” he added.

The visit comes amid a wave of national grief and calls for enhanced safety measures in boarding schools across the country following the deadly blaze.

Medical staff at Kenyatta National Hospital continue to monitor the condition of the survivors, some of whom are still in critical condition due to burns and smoke inhalation injuries.

Families have also been spending time at the hospital as they keep vigil over their children, hoping for steady recovery.

The Utumishi Girls tragedy has sparked widespread concern over fire safety standards, emergency preparedness, and infrastructure in boarding schools, with education stakeholders urging urgent reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
