Matatu Owners Assure Kenyans of Normal Operations During June 25 Commemoration

The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has assured Kenyans that public transport services will operate normally across the country on June 25, 2026, as the nation marks the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 protests.

In a statement released on Wednesday, MOA President Albert Karakacha said the association remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted transport services while prioritizing the safety of passengers, transport workers, and the general public.

Karakacha noted that while the association recognizes the significance of the day and stands in solidarity with families affected by the events of June 25, 2024, the public transport sector has a critical responsibility to continue serving Kenyans and supporting economic activities.

"We believe that justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law remain essential to national healing. At the same time, public transport remains an essential service, and our members will continue operations responsibly and professionally," he said.

The association called upon matatu owners, drivers, conductors, and support staff to remain calm, exercise restraint, and carry out their duties in accordance with the law.

MOA also reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the constitutional rights of all citizens while emphasizing the need to maintain public safety and order.

The association strongly condemned acts of violence, vandalism, arson, looting, and destruction of property, warning that such actions undermine businesses, threaten livelihoods, and jeopardize public safety.

"The safety and wellbeing of passengers, transport workers, businesses, and the public remain our foremost priority," the statement said.

Karakacha further urged all stakeholders, including citizens, community leaders, civil society organizations, businesses, and government agencies, to embrace peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue as the country reflects on the events that shaped national discourse in 2024.

He called for collective efforts to strengthen justice, accountability, and national unity, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence remains crucial for Kenya's continued progress.

The assurance from the Matatu Owners Association is expected to provide relief to commuters and businesses that rely heavily on public transport services for daily operations.

As the country prepares for the June 25 commemoration, security agencies and various stakeholders have continued to appeal for peaceful conduct, urging Kenyans to exercise their constitutional rights responsibly while safeguarding lives and property.

MOA maintained that its members will remain vigilant and cooperate with relevant authorities to ensure smooth transport operations throughout the day.
