What next after Ruto and Gachagua picked on Lusaka and Natembeya to coordinate political activities ahead of next year's elections?
A fierce political battle has divided Western Kenya into two clear camps ahead of the elections. President Ruto's team is aggressively trying to consolidate the region's vote, while Gachagua and Natembeya have formed an alliance to rally opposition against the government.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka is leading the charge to rally the Mulembe nation behind President William Ruto's second-term bid. His camp emphasizes government-driven projects like Pan Paper Mills to prove Ruto's commitment to the region.
The shifting tectonic plates of Kenyan politics have triggered a massive strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the unified opposition formally designating Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya as the supreme coordinator of all political operations in the vote-rich Western Kenya region. The high-stakes appointment positions the fiery former provincial administrator as the tip of the spear in the opposition’s aggressive campaign to decisively unseat President William Ruto.
Political writer Divinson Obare during an interview with the Vision News said the endorsement of Natembeya was publicly solidified during a massive political rallies where opposition forces, now prominently featuring former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, laid out their roadmap to power.
‘’The move is a calculated gamble to consolidate a deeply fractured Mulembe nation and lock down a regional voting bloc that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) projects will surpass 3.2 million registered voters by 2027’’, he said.
The former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya are pushing a "one region, one vote" narrative, actively campaigning against the William ruto administration.
Both factions have stepped up grassroots mobilization in the region, with Lusaka holding women's empowerment forums and Governor Natembeya utilizing his TAWE Movement to consolidate a strong support base ahead of next year’s general election.
The former Powerful provincial administrator’s alignment with Gachagua has caused tension with local leaders like the national Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and others who support William Ruto, turning both Trans Nzoia and Bungoma Counties into major battlegrounds for voter supremacy.
Governor Lusaka in his argument has been telling Bungoma and trans Nzoia residents that President William Ruto has delivered tangible development projects across Western Kenya and deserves a second term, something Natembeya has rubbished by criticizing President Ruto’s administration for doing nothing to benefit or develop Western Kenya.
Natembeya has frequently stated that the Western region remains economically marginalized despite having leaders in high-ranking national positions.
He mocked the President's working tours of the region, specifically claiming that Ruto has toured Western Kenya just to commission minor projects like a single electricity transformer and attending church services.
‘’Despite the presence of Western politicians in the national government each referring to himself as the Third in Command, the most vulnerable people of Western Kenya have continued to suffer from the high cost of living with abnormal taxation, and lack of jobs for the learned who have ended up doing menial jobs’’, said the Luhya Maestro.
Natembeya has remained a vocal critic of moves by the national government to sell off local agricultural assets, demanding that resources like gold in Ikolomani and sugar factories directly benefit the people of Western Kenya remain untouched by functionaries allied to the Ruto administration.
These remarks highlight the escalating political tension and supremacy battles in the region ahead of the 2027 General Elections with the Governor accusing Ruto's inner circle of being bitter that his move to rallying the Luhya Nation to speak in one voice will completely shatter the President’s ambition for a second term.
On the other side of the political coin, the pro-Ruto politicians and leaders in the region have been Natembeya of sowing ethnic division or attempting to weaken national leaders Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi
The big boys have tried using all means to have the governor tone down and accept to work with the President but Natembeya has insisted that he will not betray Kenyans for personal gain.
‘’It is as if, if you are not part of the choir singing praises to the President, you are bad. I will not accept that,” the governor said. “It is my mouth, and I will use it to fight for the vulnerable who must be emancipated from both economic and political serfdom’’, he said.
Those close to the national Assembly Speaker have argued that western Kenya, owing to its large voting bloc and growing support for President William 's administration, deserves a greater share of votes during next year’s elections while Natembeya says the people of western Kenya were promised heaven and left in the shackles of poverty .
It is worth noting that Natembeya who was successfully integrated into the opposition after a powerful political entity threatened to sack him from the provincial administration ranks is now a critical national asset required to dismantle the incumbent government.
During well attended rallies in Western kenya which culminated into the Mother of all political rallies in Natembeya’s backyard of Kitale, the former Deputy President asked residents to support Natembeya for a second term since he will be leading all of the opposition campaigns in the populous vote rich Mulembe Nation.
ever seen in the
"I ask you to support Governor Natembeya for a second term, and he will be leading our campaigns in this region," Gachagua Said.
The DCP leader said the opposition was working together to remove President Ruto from power in 2027.
‘’Whether the flagbearer will be Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya, Fred Matiang'i, or Kalonzo Musyoka, we will fully support them’’, he declared.
The former Deputy President attacked the Kenya Kwanza administration for gross economic mismanagement, asserting that the opposition’s primary platform will revolve around the radical resurrection of the agricultural sector.
By placing Natembeya at the helm of Western Kenya the country’s traditional breadbasket, the opposition is directly weaponizing the economic grievances of sugarcane, maize, and dairy farmers against the state and it is just a matter of time and not when but the vulnerable voters of the Mulembe nation will say ‘’ TAWE TO PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO’S SECOND TERM BID and leave his close associates cry and retreat into polit oblivion
