KENYA EYES BIGGER CHINESE MARKET AS KNCCI, CIIE AND BANKING PARTNERS FOR SHANGHAI EXPO 2026
Kenyan businesses are set to gain greater access to the Chinese market following a strategic meeting between the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), the China International Import Expo (CIIE), the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), and Stanbic Bank Kenya ahead of the 9th China International Import Expo scheduled for November 2026 in Shanghai, China.
The high-level meeting, held at the KNCCI Secretariat offices, focused on strengthening trade and investment relations between Kenya and China by facilitating the participation of Kenyan enterprises at one of the world's largest import and trade exhibitions.
The discussions were led by KNCCI Director of Partnerships and Programs Lucy Muchoki and KNCCI Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Farah, popularly known as KK Mutai. The Chinese delegation was headed by Zhou Zhencheng, Minister Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, accompanied by Hua Wei, President of the National Exhibition and Convention Center, Jia Liu, Deputy Chief Representative of ICBC Africa, and Vera Otumbi, Trade Finance Specialist at Stanbic Bank Kenya.
The meeting explored practical strategies to support Kenyan exporters, manufacturers, and investors seeking to showcase their products and services in the vast Chinese market. Key areas of discussion included business mobilization, trade promotion, market access facilitation, and financial solutions aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Kenyan enterprises.
Stakeholders noted that the upcoming expo presents a valuable platform for Kenyan businesses to expand their international footprint, attract investment opportunities, and establish new commercial partnerships with Chinese buyers and investors.
The collaboration is expected to boost bilateral trade volumes, create new investment opportunities, and contribute to sustainable economic growth through stronger engagement between the Kenyan and Chinese business communities.
The China International Import Expo has become a key gateway for countries seeking to access the Chinese market, and Kenya's participation is expected to enhance the visibility of its products, including agricultural produce, manufactured goods, and innovative services on the global stage.
