“Ikuu Boys Students Sent Home After Workshop Fire Sparks Safety Concerns”
Students at Ikuu Boys Senior School have been sent on a short break following a fire that broke out in the school’s workshop on Monday evening.
The fire erupted around 8:30 p.m., sending shockwaves through the school community. Teachers on duty acted swiftly to extinguish the blaze, preventing further destruction, though several mattresses stored in the workshop were lost.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over safety and security in Kenyan schools, highlighting the need for stronger preventive measures.
In a related event, Kiamuriuki Senior School also faced unrest when students reportedly destroyed property within the institution. Some students left the school voluntarily, while others stayed as the Board of Management (BOM) deliberated on the next steps.
Tharaka Nithi County Education Director, Mbugua Kabaki, urged school administrators to strengthen safety measures, maintain a strong presence, closely monitor student behavior, and collaborate closely with teachers, parents, and BOMs.
"Safeguarding learners and protecting school property remain key responsibilities of school administrators. Sending students home should only be considered as a last resort and after consultation with relevant authorities," Kabaki emphasized.
As investigations continue, the incidents at Ikuu Boys and Kiamuriuki Senior Schools underscore the importance of proactive safety protocols and student guidance in maintaining secure learning environments.
