Eldoret City Eyes Investment Boom as Uasin Gishu Deepens Partnership with KNCCI

Uasin Gishu County has intensified its collaboration with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) in a strategic move aimed at accelerating trade, attracting investments, and positioning Eldoret as one of Kenya's fastest-growing economic hubs.

The renewed commitment was underscored on Thursday during a high-level meeting between county officials and a delegation from the KNCCI North Rift Chapter, led by Chairperson Willy Kenei. The delegation paid a courtesy call on the County Executive Committee Member for Trade and Cooperatives, Dr. Philip Chebunet, to discuss opportunities for strengthening public-private sector collaboration and unlocking the county's economic potential.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Chebunet reaffirmed the county administration's dedication to creating a business-friendly environment that encourages entrepreneurship, investment, and sustainable economic growth.

He noted that the county government has prioritized policies and programs that support enterprises, improve market access, and attract both local and international investors. According to him, the administration recognizes the critical role played by the private sector in driving development and creating employment opportunities.

"We are committed to creating a conducive business environment that will spur economic growth, create jobs, and unlock the full potential of Eldoret City as a key commercial hub," said Dr. Chebunet.

The county official highlighted that the recent growth trajectory of Eldoret presents a unique opportunity for investors across various sectors, including manufacturing, agribusiness, logistics, housing, technology, and services. He added that ongoing infrastructure projects and governance reforms are aimed at enhancing the ease of doing business and improving investor confidence.

Eldoret's Rising Profile Attracts Attention

Since attaining city status, Eldoret has increasingly emerged as a focal point for investment and regional trade. Its strategic location within the North Rift region, coupled with improved infrastructure and connectivity, has made it an attractive destination for businesses seeking access to local and regional markets.

Dr. Chebunet emphasized that the county government will continue engaging stakeholders from the private sector to identify barriers to growth and formulate practical solutions that support enterprise development and industrial expansion.

He noted that collaborative approaches involving government institutions, business organizations, and investors are essential for sustaining economic momentum and ensuring inclusive development.

KNCCI Calls for Enhanced Support to Businesses

Speaking on behalf of the business community, KNCCI North Rift Chapter Chairperson Willy Kenei welcomed the county government's commitment to fostering a supportive investment climate.

Kenei said the chamber is eager to deepen its partnership with Uasin Gishu County in order to accelerate economic transformation and maximize opportunities arising from Eldoret's city status.

He observed that business stability, industrialization, and manufacturing remain key priorities for the private sector, adding that value addition initiatives have the potential to increase competitiveness, boost exports, and generate employment.

"The private sector is committed to working closely with the county government to promote industrial growth, support manufacturers, and create more opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors," Kenei said.

He further stressed the importance of strengthening support mechanisms for youth and women-owned enterprises, noting that access to affordable financing remains one of the biggest challenges facing small and medium-sized businesses.

According to Kenei, county-backed funding programs, mentorship initiatives, and capacity-building interventions can significantly contribute to the growth of emerging enterprises while enhancing economic inclusion.

Focus on Youth, Women and SMEs

The KNCCI leadership also advocated for expanded support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which continue to play a crucial role in job creation and wealth generation.

Business leaders urged the county government to enhance awareness and accessibility of entrepreneurship funds targeting youth and women, arguing that empowering these groups would stimulate innovation, expand local production, and strengthen the county's economic base.

They noted that many young entrepreneurs possess innovative business ideas but often face financial constraints that limit growth and sustainability.

Infrastructure Key to Sustained Growth

During the discussions, KNCCI officials pointed to the importance of continued investment in infrastructure to sustain Eldoret's rapid urban and economic growth.

The chamber identified road networks, industrial parks, modern markets, digital connectivity, and logistics facilities as critical enablers of trade and investment. They argued that strategic infrastructure development would not only attract investors but also improve efficiency for existing businesses.

The delegation further highlighted the vast untapped investment opportunities available in sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, renewable energy, real estate, transport, and technology.

Shared Vision for Economic Transformation

Both the county government and KNCCI expressed optimism that stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors would accelerate economic growth and position Eldoret as a leading commercial and industrial center in the region.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintain regular engagement and strengthen partnerships aimed at improving the business ecosystem, attracting investment, and creating sustainable employment opportunities for residents.

Also present during the meeting were Chief Officer for Cooperatives Elphas Kesio and senior county directors.

As Eldoret continues to grow and attract national and international attention, stakeholders believe that closer cooperation between government and the business community will be instrumental in transforming the city into a regional economic powerhouse and a preferred destination for investors.
