Café Owner Claims Senator Karen Nyamu's Actions Cost Him His Livelihood, Sparks Political Storm Ahead of 2027

A dispute between a small café owner and nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has erupted into a political controversy after the businessman accused the legislator of orchestrating an incident that allegedly wiped out tens of thousands of shillings worth of stock and forced him to shut down his business.

Dickens Odhiambo, a businessman who says he is widely known as "Kamau wa Kisumu," has publicly accused Nyamu of using her influence to retaliate against him after he criticized President William Ruto during a public political discussion.

The allegations, which have spread rapidly across social media platforms and political forums, have reignited debate about the conduct of public officials, the treatment of small business owners, and the responsibilities of leaders entrusted with public office.

A Dispute Over Unpaid Work

According to Odhiambo, his troubles began after he attended and worked at one of Nyamu's events. He claims he completed the work he had been asked to do but was never compensated.

The businessman says he repeatedly attempted to follow up on the payment through phone calls and messages but received no response.

"I called. I texted. I followed up respectfully," he said. "I only wanted what I had earned."

After months of unsuccessful attempts to recover the money, Odhiambo says he decided to move on and focus on running his café, which he describes as the primary source of income for his family.

Located near Mama Lucy Hospital, the small establishment served local residents, hospital visitors, boda boda riders, and workers from nearby businesses.

Like many small enterprises across Kenya, the café operated on thin margins and depended on daily sales to remain afloat.

An Unexpected Encounter

The dispute took a dramatic turn this week, according to Odhiambo, when Nyamu allegedly passed near his business premises.

The businessman says he recognized the senator and called out to her in an attempt to once again raise the issue of the unpaid money.

He insists the encounter was peaceful and respectful.

"I was not insulting her. I was not threatening her," he said. "I only wanted to remind her about my money."

Odhiambo alleges that Nyamu briefly acknowledged that the café belonged to him before leaving the area without discussing the matter further.

What happened next, he says, left him shocked.

A Sudden Flood of Customers

Minutes after the encounter, large numbers of people reportedly began arriving at the café.

According to Odhiambo, the crowd included youths, women, and boda boda riders.

At first, he believed the sudden influx of customers was a blessing.

Business had been difficult, he says, and seeing dozens of people streaming toward his café appeared to signal a rare opportunity.

"I thought she had brought me customers," Odhiambo said. "I thought maybe she had decided to help me after all."

The businessman claims he was encouraged to serve everyone and not to limit portions or supplies.

Trusting that he would be paid, he says he began serving customers as quickly as possible.

Food items including meat, fish, chips, smokies and bhajia were distributed throughout the afternoon.

He also says three full crates of large soft drinks were emptied.

Some customers allegedly left carrying returnable soda crates, adding to his losses.

By the end of the rush, much of the café's stock had been exhausted.

"I was standing there smiling," Odhiambo recalled. "I thought God had finally answered my prayers."

Allegations of Political Retaliation

According to Odhiambo, his optimism quickly vanished.

The businessman alleges that he was later informed that the gathering was not intended to support his business but rather to punish him.

He claims Nyamu told him the incident was retaliation for comments he had made criticizing President William Ruto at a Bunge la Mwananchi forum.

Bunge la Mwananchi forums are informal public discussion spaces where citizens debate political and social issues.

Odhiambo says he had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the government's performance during one such gathering.

He alleges that the destruction of his stock was intended as revenge for those remarks.

If true, the allegations would raise serious questions about political intolerance and the use of influence against ordinary citizens expressing political opinions.

Going Public

In the aftermath of the incident, Odhiambo says he decided to make his claims public.

He shared screenshots of what he described as private communications and began speaking to online audiences about what had happened.

The story quickly gained traction on social media, drawing thousands of comments from Kenyans divided over the controversy.

Some users expressed sympathy for the businessman and called for accountability.

Others questioned aspects of the account and urged the public to wait for more information before drawing conclusions.

As public attention intensified, videos and statements attributed to Nyamu also circulated online, further fueling debate.

Public Reaction to the Senator's Remarks

One of the most controversial aspects of the dispute involves remarks Odhiambo claims were made by the senator regarding his losses.

According to the businessman, Nyamu downplayed the value of the stock consumed during the incident and questioned the figures he had provided.

He also alleges that she joked about sending similar crowds to his business in the future.

The remarks, widely discussed online, triggered criticism from some Kenyans who argued that even relatively small losses can have devastating consequences for small businesses operating on limited capital.

For many entrepreneurs, losing inventory worth several thousand shillings can mean the difference between survival and closure.

Business groups and commentators have increasingly highlighted the vulnerability of micro-enterprises, particularly in urban areas where operating costs continue to rise.

A Business Forced to Close

Odhiambo says the financial impact of the incident was immediate and severe.

Without sufficient capital to replenish stock, he claims the café struggled to continue operating.

Eventually, he says, he was forced to close the business entirely.

The closure has affected not only his income but also the welfare of his family, who depended on the café for their daily needs.

"It took years to build," he said. "It disappeared in a single day."

The businessman now says he is uncertain about his future and how he will recover from the setback.

Political Implications

The controversy arrives at a sensitive moment in Kenya's political landscape.

Nyamu remains one of the country's most recognizable political figures and has frequently attracted media attention for both her political activities and public statements.

Speculation has persisted about her future political ambitions, including the possibility of seeking elective office in Nairobi during the 2027 General Election.

The allegations by Odhiambo have therefore taken on a broader political dimension, with critics questioning whether leaders seeking public trust should be associated with conduct perceived as hostile toward ordinary citizens.

Supporters of the senator, meanwhile, have defended her and argued that the matter has been exaggerated for political purposes.

Wider Questions About Leadership

Beyond the personal dispute, the incident has sparked discussion about the relationship between political leaders and citizens.

Analysts note that elected and nominated leaders are increasingly scrutinized not only for policy decisions but also for how they interact with ordinary Kenyans.

The controversy has also renewed debate about freedom of expression and whether citizens should feel secure criticizing public officials and government policies without fear of retaliation.

For many observers, the central issue is larger than the disagreement between a senator and a businessman.

It is about trust, accountability, and the expectations Kenyans place on those who occupy positions of public authority.

As debate continues online and in political circles, the allegations remain contested, and independent verification of all claims has yet to emerge.
