Big Relief for ECDE Teachers as Baringo County Confirms 1,600 on Permanent and Pensionable Terms

Thousands of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Baringo County have received long-awaited job security after the county government confirmed the conversion of 1,600 teachers from temporary engagement to permanent and pensionable terms.

The announcement marks a major milestone for ECDE educators who have served under contract and casual arrangements for years, often raising concerns over job stability, benefits, and career progression.

Governor Benjamin Cheboi said the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector by investing in teachers, infrastructure, and learning resources from the foundational level.

He noted that improving the welfare of ECDE teachers is central to enhancing learning outcomes, particularly as the county continues to expand access to early childhood education across rural and urban areas.

“This is part of our broader commitment to invest in education and skills development from the earliest stages to technical training that guarantees employability for our young people,” said Governor Cheboi.

The Governor highlighted that the county has significantly increased funding for education programmes, including the expansion of ECDE infrastructure, support for vocational training centers (VTCs), bursaries and scholarships for needy students, and the rollout of digital learning initiatives.

He further revealed that the county government is introducing digital literacy programmes in more than 500 ECDE centres across Baringo as part of efforts to prepare learners for a technology-driven future.

According to Cheboi, the integration of digital tools in early learning institutions is aimed at ensuring that children are exposed to modern learning methods from an early age, enhancing creativity, problem-solving skills, and adaptability.

“The county government is implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in all ECDE centres and providing curriculum designs alongside other essential instructional materials to strengthen teaching and learning,” he added.

Education stakeholders in the county have welcomed the move, describing it as a major boost for early childhood education and a step that will improve morale among teachers who have long called for permanent employment.

Many ECDE teachers expressed relief and gratitude, saying the confirmation of permanent terms will significantly improve their financial stability, access to credit facilities, and long-term career planning.

The development is also expected to enhance service delivery in ECDE centres by reducing staff turnover and motivating teachers to focus on improving learning outcomes.

Parents across Baringo have also lauded the decision, noting that consistent staffing in ECDE centres will ensure better learning continuity for young children during their formative years.

Governor Cheboi reiterated that investing in early childhood education remains one of the most effective ways of building a strong foundation for future academic success and national development.

He assured residents that the county will continue prioritizing education as a key pillar of its development agenda, with increased focus on quality, access, and relevance to the job market.

The announcement has been widely described as one of the most significant education policy decisions in the county in recent years, with expectations that it will strengthen both teaching standards and learner performance across Baringo.
