Youth Rise Against Corruption: University of Eldoret Students Lead Integrity Revolution

A new wave in the fight against corruption is sweeping through campuses, with students at the University of Eldoret stepping up as champions of accountability under the Tupigane na Ufisadi (TUNU) programme.

Launched through a collaboration between the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association and partners including Transparency International, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Media Council of Kenya, European Union, and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the initiative is equipping 60 students with practical tools to resist and report corruption.

The 12-month programme, which kicked off in February, focuses on establishing and strengthening Integrity Clubs within universities. These clubs aim to cultivate a culture of transparency and ethical leadership among young people.

Programme manager Abraham Too emphasized the long-term vision of the project, noting that empowering youth is key to sustainable change. He said the initiative seeks to nurture a generation that rejects corruption and embraces accountability from the grassroots.

At the university, the Communications Department has praised the programme as both timely and transformative. Dr Cherotich Mung'ou highlighted the role of higher learning institutions in shaping not just intellect, but also values, adding that the initiative will help produce responsible and ethical graduates.

Students have also welcomed the programme, expressing optimism that it gives them a voice and the confidence to confront corruption. Many say it shifts their role from passive observers to active participants in driving change.

The programme will culminate in an inter-university integrity debate, where participants will demonstrate their understanding and commitment to promoting transparency and accountability.

As the TUNU programme gains momentum, it signals a growing determination among Kenya’s youth to take a stand against corruption and redefine the country’s future leadership.
