MPs Praise Diani Modern Market as Kwale Housing Projects Drive Jobs and Trade
Members of the National Assembly Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works have praised the newly developed Diani Modern Market in Kwale County, describing it as a transformative project that is already improving livelihoods and boosting local trade.
During an inspection tour of development projects in the county on Thursday, lawmakers said the modern market demonstrates how public infrastructure can support economic growth while providing traders with dignified and secure working spaces.
Traders operating at the facility lauded the project, saying the upgraded market has improved hygiene standards, business operations and storage of fresh produce through modern cold storage facilities and improved trading spaces.
Acting Committee Chairperson Rindikiri Mugambi said the market reflects the government’s commitment to empowering small-scale traders and creating inclusive economic opportunities.
“This market is going to uplift traders economically and provide a clean and secure environment for biashara. It is encouraging to see wananchi already appreciating the impact this project will have on their lives,” Mugambi said.
The Diani Modern Market project, valued at more than Ksh193 million, is currently 99 percent complete and features commercial stalls, a modern market block, a borehole and other supporting infrastructure.
The committee also toured the Diani White House Affordable Housing Project in Msambweni Constituency, where members praised the ongoing construction works and the involvement of local youth and artisans in the project.
Lawmakers noted that local young people had been engaged as interns and apprentices, while Jua Kali artisans were supplying materials including door frames and fittings.
Daniel Manduku said the affordable housing programme was creating employment opportunities while equipping young people with practical skills.
“This programme is not just about houses. It is about creating jobs, transferring skills to young people and opening opportunities for local artisans and suppliers,” Manduku said.
The housing project, sitting on a one-acre parcel of land in Diani, is expected to deliver 154 housing units by July 2026 at an estimated cost of Ksh544 million.
The development includes amenities such as a clubhouse, waste treatment systems and garbage collection infrastructure. It has also incorporated Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives supporting a local dispensary, primary school and laboratory.
Earlier, the committee inspected the Matuga Affordable Housing Project, which consists of more than 200 housing units alongside social amenities including an underground water tank and waste management facilities.
In Kombani, the MPs also conducted a drive-through inspection of roads upgraded to bitumen standards under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme, noting that the improved road network had enhanced accessibility and stimulated business activities within informal settlements.
The committee expressed optimism that once completed, the housing and market projects would significantly improve living standards, stimulate urban renewal and create employment opportunities for residents across Kwale County.
